1997, the newly-built area between Bostam Square and Hyatt Hotel, Opera House and Casino was named "marlene dietrich Square" in Berlin Zoo City. The commemorative words read: "Berlin's world movie and music stars, for freedom and democracy, for Berlin and Germany." On the occasion of her centenary birthday in 200 1 year, Berlin officially apologized for her hostility to the past. On May 6, 2002, she was awarded an honorary citizen of Berlin.
Marlene dietrich conquered the public through her neutral temperament. She supported equality between men and women and often wore men's clothes, which was controversial at that time. But because of this, she became the idol of the women's movement in World War II. Because she is bisexual, she has also become a representative of homosexuality.
Politically and socially, she devoted herself to opposing Hitler's inhuman nationalism and won international praise, which was obviously earlier than the praise she could get in her native Germany. 1947, she won the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest citizen award in the United States. 1950, the French government awarded her the "French Legion of Honor".
