During the Han and Tang Dynasties, Liangzhou was the largest ancient city in northwest China, second only to Chang 'an. During the Eastern Jin Dynasty and the Sixteen Kingdoms Period, Daliang in the early Tang Dynasty built its capital here, and was later ruled by counties, prefectures and governments.

Liangzhou dialect is a kind of northwest dialect, belonging to Hexi section of Lanyin Mandarin.
It has a corresponding relationship with medieval phonology and Beijing phonology.
There are 27 initials, 29 finals and 3 tones. In terms of initials, according to the different pronunciation methods, they can be divided into stop, stop, fricative, nasal and marginal sounds; Vowels can be divided into single vowels, compound vowels and nasal vowels.
