folk story

1969 Wuwei County, Gansu Province, in a village 2 kilometers away from the county seat, the villagers are going to dig a tunnel according to the arrangement of their superiors. The tunnel will pass through an earthen platform called Leitai. This earthen platform is called Leitai because there is a Taoist temple on it, and Raytheon is enshrined in the back hall of the Taoist temple. You can tell at a glance that this earthen platform has been rammed by hand. Because Wuwei County is an important town on the ancient Silk Road, this area has a long history and profound cultural heritage, so the traces left by the ancients can be seen everywhere, and it is difficult to attract the attention of local villagers with artificial rammed earth platforms like this.

One afternoon, the villagers began to dig tunnels step by step. When the tunnel was dug to a depth of about 13 meters, they found a brick wall on the side wall of the tunnel. When they hit the wall with a pick, they found it was empty. The captain gave a hard knock with a chisel and opened a hole. Suddenly, a pungent smell came to my face. When I took a flashlight, I found that I couldn't take it at all. These villagers are timid. The captain was courageous, so he took the villagers into the ancient tomb road and explored forward with a flashlight. Under the irradiation of flashlight, they saw rows of bronze figures, bronze horses and bronze chariots, which were a group of bronze chariots and horses. But these villagers have no education and don't know each other. The light of their flashlights on these cultural relics made them think that they were made of gold.

The news that they dug up the treasure was soon known to the commune leaders, who sent militia to block the scene and report to the relevant leaders in charge of this area in the province. Soon after, experts from Gansu Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology came to Wuwei County to further clean up the ancient tomb. Experts entered the ancient tomb road and saw copper coins and broken pottery pots everywhere. On the coffin bed, there are overturned coffin plates and two bones. Obviously, this is a husband-and-wife burial tomb. After careful cleaning, experts found that there were two stolen holes in this ancient tomb road, which means that this ancient tomb has been stolen twice by grave robbers before. It is estimated that grave robbers at that time only stole gold and silver jewelry that sold well, and were not interested in bronzes, so they took these precious bronze chariots and horses as slaves. This ancient tomb was found under Leitai, so it was named the Han Tomb of Leitai in Wuwei.

This group of bronze chariots and horses found in Wuwei County entered the Gansu Provincial Museum, which is one of the earliest comprehensive museums in China. Gansu is rich in cultural heritage, and there are a large number of precious cultural relics left by Longyuan. The Gansu Provincial Museum has a unique collection of resources, which brings together a large number of cultural treasures in Gansu from ancient times to modern times, including painted pottery in Gansu, bamboo slips of the Han Dynasty, treasures of the Silk Road, and the essence of Buddhist art. It can be called the crown of the Neolithic Age. Bronze chariots and horses unearthed from Leitai Han Tomb in Wuwei were also sent here for study. However, in the face of such a large-scale bronze chariots and horses, experts have made a mistake, because such a large-scale bronze chariots and horses tomb is extremely rare or even unique. So who is the owner of this tomb and why can there be such a large group of bronze chariots and horses?

So the experts began to clean up carefully with curiosity, looking for clues and confirming the identity of the tomb owner. Four silver general print were found near the coffin bed where the couple were buried together, indicating that the owner of the tomb was made a general four times before his death, with a prominent position and brilliant military exploits. 12 bronze maids, male and female, were found near the coffin bed. The word behind the servant girl is "Zhang's slave" and the word behind the servant girl is "Zhang's servant girl", so it can be confirmed that the owner of the tomb may be surnamed Zhang. An inscription was found on the chest of a bronze horse, indicating that this man surnamed Zhang once served as the chief of Wuwei, but according to the regulations of the Han Dynasty, the first-class officer of the chief paved his grave. However, there are about 28,000 pieces of copper coins cleared from these tombs, and they were left after being stolen twice, so this person's status must be higher than that of the chief. Later, the inscriptions of "Zhang Jun's ex-wife" and "Zhang Jun's queen" were found on some bronzes, saying that "Mrs." was the wife of a vassal, so people inferred that the county magistrate also had the title of marquis, so relevant scholars paid attention to it. There is only one person who holds the title of Marquis in Liangzhou, and he is Zhangjiang. Because Liangzhou is located in a military strategic location, the Qiang people at that time had to go through Zhangye Canyon to attack Liangzhou, and this general Zhangjiang stayed in this canyon. Because of his active defense, he was named "Strong General", which is exactly the same as the unearthed silver general print. But how can he have such a beautiful team of horses and chariots? At that time, Zhangye produced a lot of copper, and Liangzhou's bronze smelting process was also superb. Zhang is the governor of Wuwei, and he is named Hou. In order to thank Emperor Han Ming for his kindness in meeting him, he cast this set of bronze chariots and horses for the emperor. After these bronze chariots and horses were sent to Luoyang, Emperor Hanming liked them very much and put them in Pingliang, and named them "Liangzhou Horse Workers". Unfortunately, these bronze chariots and horses were destroyed in Dong Zhuo's rebellion at the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty. Fortunately, Zhangjiang made two sets to choose from, one for Beijing and the other for himself. After his death, his descendants buried bronze chariots and horses in his grave.

The bronze chariots and horses minions did not receive so much attention in the Gansu Provincial Museum at that time, until a Bole who appreciated it appeared, that is, Guo Moruo, then president of China Academy of Sciences. How does Guo Can Murray pay attention to bronze chariots and horses? Two years after the excavation, Lao Guo visited the northwest with the government delegation and came to Lanzhou. Although the visit schedule was full and the time was tight, Lao Guo, who likes cultural relics, came to the Gansu Provincial Museum to see the cultural relics collected here when foreign guests were resting. When he saw this group of horses and chariots, he was attracted by one of them. He exclaimed: Great, beautiful, great, us! After enjoying it, he looked at a swallow at the foot of this "Copper Horse Racing" and named it "Flying Swallow on the Horse". From then on, this horse was named after "the horse stepped on the swallow" and became famous all over the world.

After Lao Guo returned to Beijing, he still couldn't let go of this "Flying Swallow on horseback", so he discussed with the head of the Cultural Relics Bureau at that time whether it was possible to transfer this "Flying Swallow on horseback" and bronze chariots and horses to Beijing, so he came to the Forbidden City in Beijing to participate in the exhibition. However, this "flying swallow on horseback" statue was dismembered at that time, and its mane and ponytail were gone. There are several holes in its neck, and all three horseshoes are empty. Fortunately, the Palace Museum has a bronze restoration expert. After expert repair, the mane and ponytail have been restored, reappearing the spirit of this galloping horse. After the repair, it is as old as before according to the traditional method, and there is no trace of repair. Therefore, this galloping horse spread all over the world.
