Zhao Benxue was a Yi-ology scholar and a military theorist, while Cai Qing was a Quanzhou native and a Neo-Confucianism scholar, who mainly studied Virtual Zhai, so he was named Empty Boat. His major military works include Zhao Zhu's Art of War and Zhong Tao's internal and external articles.
Sun Tzu's Art of War was written by Sun Wu, a strategist in the Spring and Autumn Period in China, and it is a classic work of ancient Chinese military theory. There are more than 200 annotations on it in past dynasties, among which there are more than 10 famous ones. They are Cao Cao, Li Shimin and Li Jing in the Three Kingdoms, Zhang Yu and Mencius in the Song Dynasty, and Zhao Benxue and Li Zhi in the Ming Dynasty. Before his death, Zhao Benxue taught Zhao Sunzi's Annotations on the Art of War, and edited Zhao's Inside and Outside Pagoda, Sunzi's Thirteen Annotations on the Art of War and his own Sword Sutra into a Summary of the Continuation of the Martial Arts, which was published worldwide. In this way, there are two books in Quanzhou, one is Wu Yao, edited by Ceng Gongliang, the prime minister of the Northern Song Dynasty (now a native of Licheng District); The other is Yu's The Continuation of the Martial Arts, edited by his teacher Zhao Benxue, and his own military works.
Zhao Zhu's The Art of War has 13 articles in five volumes. The characteristic of this book is that "the words have a solution, the solution makes the meaning obvious, and the introduction makes the matter core". Its meaning is concise and its quotation is accurate. According to statistics, this book lists 180 cases, which is a military book with complete theory, typical historical cases and unique opinions.
Cai Qing, a master of Yi Studies, was born in Quanzhou in the Ming Dynasty. He wrote Yi. At that time, there was a saying that "everything in the world is easy, and everyone pushes Jinjiang (Cai Qing is from Jinjiang)". Zhao Benxue devoted himself to the study of the Book of Changes, and guided the art of war by it, that is, "playing soldiers with the Book of Changes". Yu said: "I have been reading the internal and external chapters of Zhong Tao by my former professor for many years, and those who lead it know that they are all based on Yi."
Since then, Zhao Zhu's The Art of War has been widely circulated in Ryukyu, Japan, the United States and other countries. In A.D. 1863, Japan reprinted Sun Tzu's Art of War, which was annotated by Zhao for many times, and became the most commonly used book for studying Sun Tzu's Art of War in Japan. More than 70 years later, Japan sent Zhao Zhu's The Art of War back to Sun Tzu. 1928, The Art of War annotated by Yuan Kubota and Yin Qing was published in Yin Shi.
After Zhao's death, he was buried in Wenglinshan, the east residence of No.38 Capital (now Heshi Town, Luojiang District) in Jinjiang County, that is, the east residence where Fuxia Highway turned into Heshi Highway two kilometers away. The tomb was listed as the fourth batch of cultural relics protection units in Quanzhou in April 1998.
