Alice Peters' novel The Cadfar Brothers is set in the civil war between Stephen and Mathilde's supporters. Later, when it was made into a movie, Derek Jacobi played the leading role.

Joan Bailey also wrote a series of historical novels, among which the third part of Norman Trilogy tells the story between Stephen and Mathilde.

This civil war is also an important plot in Ken Follert's masterpiece Spring and Autumn Annals of the Temple.
