Agate lake is located in Bayannaoer City, Inner Mongolia, adjacent to Bayin Gobi Desert in Alxa League. This is a wide basalt flat depression, and the flat beach is covered with a dazzling array of agates and jasper. Every round and lovely agate is as big as an egg and colorful, including white, light yellow, orange, gray and red. Jasper is mostly red, but also sky blue and dark blue. Like a hundred flowers blooming, it constitutes a great spectacle on the Gobi Desert. According to legend, a long time ago, this Gobi Desert was a crystal clear lake. Blue waves rippled in the lake, and Tianshui was the same color. The fairy in the sky was attracted by this beautiful lake. Has drifted into the lake to take a bath. According to scientific analysis, the basalt here is the product of volcanic eruption more than 1 100 million years ago. Due to the rapid escape of volcanic gas, many pores and caves are left in the rock. Volcanic hydrothermal solution filled with silicon dioxide is pervasive, filling these pores and caves. After a long period of evolution, agate and jasper were formed. Strong weathering and denudation make agate and jasper free from basalt and spread in the desert. The storm brought them to the lake again. Due to years of drought, the lake dried up, revealing the bottom of the lake covered with agate and jasper, so there was this strange and rare natural landscape-agate lake.

In 1980s, business-minded people reached out to agate lake and took away thousands of tons of agate, opal, jade Gobi, ruby and jasper from agate lake at a meager price. They cut all kinds of strange stones with different textures into hand ornaments or other handicrafts, and made a group of millionaires. By the time the local people and government realized it, it was already too late, and the colorful agate lake in the past had turned into a yellow sand.
