In fact, this far-fetched inference has no scientific reason.
First of all, the jewelry currently on the market, especially high-grade gems, are generally natural stones, and most of them have been tested by relevant state departments. However, the number of colored, discolored or synthetic gems is very small, generally marked, and the price is far lower than that of natural gems.
Secondly, as far as radiation-processed gems are concerned, they do not contain radioactive substances or have extremely low content. At present, the technology of synthesizing or processing precious stones is superb. As far as the types of radiation processing are concerned, there are three kinds of radiation: gamma-ray radiation, electron radiation excited by high-energy electron beam and neutron radiation. The former does not induce radioactivity at all, while the latter two induce discoloration and a small amount of radioactive substances. However, because special devices and instruments can be used for monitoring and screening during the radiation process, the residual radioactive material is negligible, and this insignificant radioactive material will gradually decay after a period of time until it disappears completely.
It should be pointed out that although there is no uniform regulation on the residual radioactivity index of irradiated gemstones in the world, and there is no corresponding standard in China, most countries and regions in the world implement the radioactive exemption and limited management system for irradiated gemstones, and also have specific limited requirements for some important nuclides. As far as the current level of gem radiation processing in China is concerned, its index value is far below the international risk limit. Therefore, wearing such processed gems will not cause any harm to human health.
