Colombian emeralds come from a mountain in two zones, namely East cordilleras. In the western region, from north to south are penas Broncas, Kosgei, Lapita, Muzuo and Iacopi; . The eastern region is Chivor and Gachala mining areas. These mines are located in Boyaca province and are difficult to pass.

Colombian emeralds are composed of hydrothermal deposits, and the geological processes in the western and eastern regions are basically the same. Emerald occurs in shale and limestone rich in organic matter. In the cracks of shale, emeralds and other associated minerals are infiltrated and deposited by hot fluids. This sedimentation took place under high temperature and high pressure, and fluid inclusions became inclusions in the crystallization process of emerald, just like a "fingerprint" with geological significance.
