Why are there eight precepts in Buddhism and what are they?
The Eighth Ring Road is the Eight Guanting Ring Road.

The precepts of Baguanting can be expounded from eight aspects: types, differences, givers, recipients, time, ways, knowledge and merits:

I. Types

There are four kinds of precepts in the Eight Guanting Pavilion: the first is the Eight Guanting Pavilion; The second is the Eight Official Pavilion Ring of Hinayana; The third is Mahayana's Eight Official Pavilion amulet; The fourth is the secret eight official pavilion ring.

Second, the differences of various precepts in the Eight Official Pavilion.

The world's eight official pavilions, Hinayana and Mahayana are all based on conversion. If you don't convert, you won't get the ring of Baguanting.

"Give Up All" makes it very clear that there are two situations when you don't convert: first, you don't convert because you don't have confidence in the three treasures; Second, although I have confidence in the Sambo, I didn't know before that I wanted to get the conversion amulet, or I forgot to get the conversion amulet when I gave the amulet to Baguan Pavilion. The first kind of people won't get any eight official pavilions.

The difference between them lies in the heart:

(a) in order to get some petty profits, health, longevity, etc. In this secular life, or in order not to fall into hell, not to be born next to others, not to be hungry, and to be blessed by human beings and heaven, accepting the Eight Guanting amulet is the Eight Guanting amulet in the world. Although the eight official pavilions in the world have the basis of conversion, they do not belong to heresy, but they do not belong to abstinence either. As a result, they are just a blessing in the world. Because if you don't quit, there will be centrifugation. If there is no alienation, even if you accept the monks' commandments, Misha's commandments and other monks' commandments, it can't be called other liberation commandments and can't be a cause of liberation.

(2) Accepting the Eight Official Pavilion Ring on the basis of conversion and alienation, but no bodhicitta is the Eight Official Pavilion Ring of Hinayana.

(3) Accepting the Eight Official Pavilion Ring on the basis of conversion, alienation and bodhicitta is the Mahayana Eight Official Pavilion Ring, which belongs to the Bodhisattva Ring.

Initiation is very important before accepting the precepts of Baguanting. It is best to have an unpretentious quirk and bodhicitta, but it is really not possible, and there should be similar quirks and bodhicitta.

There are six differences between the first three Eight Official Pavilion Rings and Tantric Eight Official Pavilion Rings:

(1) Appointed person

The first three precepts of the Eight Official Pavilion are acceptable to laymen, but not to monks. The precepts of Tantric Eight Official Pavilion can be accepted by monks and their families.

Because the level of becoming a monk is different from the first three eight official pavilions. On the basis of low-level commandments, you can obey high-level commandments. But with high-level precepts, and then accepting low-level precepts, there are two results: one is that you can't get the precepts; If you get the ring, the original ring will also give up at the same time. If a monk accepts the first three eight-official pavilion precepts, it is possible to give up the monk precepts. Therefore, monks cannot be bound by the first three precepts of the Eight Official Pavilion.

(2) The giver of the commandments

When you first accept the first three commandments of the Eight Official Pavilion, you need to accept them in front of a good knowledge. It is best to accept the amulet of Tantric Eight Official Pavilion in front of good knowledge. If you can't find it, you can also accept it in front of the Buddha statue.

(3) sending letters

The first two Baguanting precepts don't need bodhicitta, as long as there are conversion precepts and alienation precepts. The precepts of Tantric Eight Official Pavilion must have bodhicitta.

(4) etiquette

In addition to the * * * rituals of the first three Eight Guanting Rings, the Eight Guanting Rings in Tantric Buddhism belong to the outer secret precepts, including meditation, initiation and specific rituals.

(5) Learning Office

Although the eight precepts of Baguanting are the same, the precepts of the tantric Baguanting must be vegetarian, and you can't even eat Sanjin meat. There is no such requirement in the first three Eight-official Pavilion Commandments, especially the first two Eight-official Pavilion Commandments.

(vi) Results

The precepts and virtues of the Eight Official Pavilion of Tantric Sect are considerable, and the result is Buddha's fruit. The precepts of Mahayana Buddhism in the Eight Guanting Pavilion can also be the cause of becoming a Buddha because of its bodhicitta, but the results of the first two precepts in the Eight Guanting Pavilion are only the blessing of human beings and the status of Arhat grosvenor, not the cause of becoming a Buddha.

In addition, there are some differences in the details of the secret eight official pavilions-taboo, manifestation, diet and so on.

Third, teachers.

Do you need good knowledge when you are appointed? Does good knowledge have to be a monk?

On this issue, there are different views: Hinayana Prajna Nirvana Tibetan believes that all eight liberation commandments need to be accepted in front of monks. However, other Buddhist scriptures believe that monks, brahmins (non-heretical brahmins) or anyone who is under the precepts of the Eight Official Pavilion and can recite rituals can be subjected to the precepts. In this way, there are two different versions of Buddhist scriptures. Hinayana believes that everything supports the view of law; The Hinayana Sutra holds the second view: Although the precept of becoming a monk needs to be accepted, and it is a monk, it is not necessary to accept it in front of the monk. The Buddhist precept can be taught by trained laymen, and the educated can also get the precept.

The layman referred to here is not as good as a layman like Master Marba or many successful Sakyamuni people. If there is really no way to find better good knowledge, you can get the precepts in front of ordinary laymen, but out of respect for the precepts, you should not be too hasty and casual.

However, no matter how high the certificate is, no matter how good the practice is, even an accomplished person like Master Maba, as long as his identity is in his family, he is not qualified to inherit the family precepts.

Although it has been said in the individual works of the Bodhisattva, you can get the ring body when you receive the Mahayana Eight-Pass Ring in front of the Buddha statue, and no one has handed it down. However, when you actually upload the precepts, especially when you are first ordained, you still need a good knowledge.

In terms of precepts, although we can sometimes make theoretical choices, we still have to look at Buddhist scriptures more often, and we should do what the Buddha said at the beginning.

Fourth, be ordained.

The immortal precepts of Baguanting can be accepted by anyone who has been disciplined by laymen. When the layman receives this precept, it becomes the "long-clean method" of the layman, and the long-clean method is also a kind of good and evil method. A layman who has not been consecrated by a layman but has converted can accept it, but a monk can't.

The precepts of Tantric Eight Official Pavilion can be accepted by monks and their families.

Five, the time of being ordained

In the morning, when you can see the handprint only by natural light without any light source, you can hold it until before sunrise.

Because the abstinence of Baguanting is only 24 hours, it must be accepted at dawn. If the time is postponed until after sunrise, it will not be 24 hours, and then the fasting in Baguanting will be incomplete.

In addition, the Bodhisattva Nirvana also formulated the precepts of the Eight Customs Pavilion, which were only accepted at night or during the day. For example, before going to bed, abstinence naturally disappears at dawn the next day; Or at dawn in the morning and sunset at night, the abstinence body disappears naturally, and the day is only one night or twelve hours. This is also a convenient way to educate all beings and cultivate good roots. The idea of no bodhisattva amulet is based on Buddhist scriptures, and we don't need to have any doubts. As long as you stick to your principles, you will definitely get the precepts.

But what I'm talking about here is the 24-hour Eight-official Pavilion Ring, so it must be held from the time when you can see handprints to sunrise.

Sixth, the way to be ordained.

Hinayana sends out centrifugation, and Mahayana sends out bodhicitta, which is the minimum premise. There are also some requirements as follows:

(1) When you are ordained for the first time in the morning, you can't eat breakfast before you are ordained;

(2) Take a bath before taking the medicine. If conditions do not allow, you must also wash five branches-face, hands and feet.

(3) If you only take one day off, it will be very simple. Just recite the ceremony. If it's a year, two years, five years or a lifetime, it's the 8th, 15th and 30th of each month as stipulated by Buddhist scriptures, and other days with extraordinary merits-10th, 25th, 29th, or any fixed day or days. Then when you are ordained for the first time, you should be inspired by your own choice, and then accept it at one time. In the future, on the fasting day of each month, just read the rules and regulations before Siddhartha Gautama.

If you accept these eight precepts every day for life instead of a few days every month, it will not be called the eight customs ring, but become a Buddhist ring. The layman who keeps this subject is called the "fruit eye" layman.

Zhanzhaguomu is a very famous commentator, bodhisattva and achiever in India. He is a lay man, who has adhered to these eight commandments all his life, so he is called "Zhan Za Guo Mu".

All departments think it is necessary to be baptized at one time, that is, after the first fasting before breakfast, or even after breakfast on the fasting day every month; The Sutra of the Ministry of Classics and the Sutra of Bodhisattva without Buddha hold that in addition to receiving it after breakfast, it should be received at one time. Without good knowledge, it can only be received in front of the Buddha statue.

(4) When I was ordained for the first time, if I was so worried: if I arranged the wrong day because of the difference between the lunar calendar and the Tibetan calendar, or forgot to be ordained, I could make it up the next day. I think it should be possible.

Also, in order to avoid family members' dissatisfaction and incomprehension, and even to denigrate Buddhism, when I was ordained for the first time, I made a vow: If the Mid-Autumn Festival and New Year's Eve fell on the same day as the Tibetan calendar and the Chinese calendar, I took the oath on the previous 14 and 29, and all other days were normal ordained except these two special days. I think it should be possible.

Although there is no direct teaching evidence of Buddhist scriptures in the above-mentioned ways of receiving the precepts, there should be no problem because receiving the precepts should be based on one's own initiative.

But if you don't have such psychological preparation when you first get ordained, and you want to change the date of ordained temporarily when things come to a head, it will definitely not work.

(5) The date of initiation should be calculated according to the Tibetan calendar and the calendar calculation method of Shilun King Kong. First of all, because the calendar calculation method of time wheel King Kong is what Buddha Xuan said. That is to say, of all the calendars in the world, only the Tibetan calendar is a Buddhist calendar, and the other lunar, solar and lunar calendars have nothing to do with Buddhism.

Secondly, the calendar calculation method of time wheel King Kong is also very accurate. Although some reference books say that Princess Wencheng first brought the Tibetan calendar into Tibet, and later influenced by religion, some days were considered auspicious, so one day was added. If a day is considered unlucky, it will be removed, so there will be two 1, 3 and so on. , otherwise there will be no 4, 5, etc. But this is not the case. The Tibetan calendar, which is widely used in Tibet now, was not brought in by Princess Wencheng, but was calculated according to the time wheel King Kong.

As for the reason why the day becomes longer or shorter, it is related to the difference of yin and yang calendars. This origin calculation can be divided into three types: lunar calendar (Islamic calendar), solar calendar (Gregorian calendar) and solar calendar (Tibetan calendar, etc.). Tibetan calendar is a lunar calendar-a calendar calculated by combining lunar calendar and solar calendar. Generally speaking, we will divide the period from the fifteenth full moon to the next full moon into 30 equal parts, so that it will be a day in the lunar calendar. The time between sunrise every day and sunrise the next day is a day in the solar calendar. The time of a day in the lunar calendar is a little shorter than that in the solar calendar. When the lunar calendar is put together, there will be some discrepancies. After accumulation, one more day or one less day is good.

As we all know, the orbit of the moon around the earth is elliptical, so there are perigee and apogee. When the moon is at perigee, due to the influence of gravity, the speed of the moon will be accelerated, so during this period, the daily time will be shortened. When the moon is near the apogee, the speed of the moon will also slow down because of the weakening of gravity, so during this period, the daily time will become longer. This calendar method is very scientific, and it completely conforms to modern astronomy. There is nothing wrong, and there is no such thing as good luck or bad luck. So it should be more appropriate to be ordained according to the Tibetan calendar.

(6) The Buddhist scriptures say that when ordained, the ordained person's position must be lower than that of the preacher. If you are ordained in front of the Buddha statue, the Buddha statue should also be placed high, and there are offerings-flowers, water, incense, lamps, etc. -It should be set in front of the Buddha statue as far as possible. After arranging the offerings, you kowtow to the Buddha statue and good knowledge three times, and then you either put your hands together or cross your hands and recite the rituals three times. At the end of the third time, the ordained person gets the precept. The most important thing is to be motivated, one is to be eccentric and bodhi; The other is an oath: between now and sunrise tomorrow, I must strictly abide by the precepts of the Eight Guanting Pavilion.

Seven. Learning office

(1) Killing

The killing of the laity's five commandments refers to the killing of adults and fetuses; In Baguanting, criminals are forbidden to kill animals, including not only people, but also small creatures such as ants and mosquitoes. Because the eight official pavilions only have 24 hours to quit, the requirements for abstinence should be stricter, so you must pay attention.

There are two kinds of ceremonies: one is in the Buddhist scriptures, and the other is in other Buddhist scriptures. Among China's Tripitaka, it is the Eight-lent Sutra of Buddhism. However, the name of this Tibetan Buddhist sutra is not the Eight Zhai Jing of Buddhism, and its content is much more detailed than that of the Chinese version, which omits a lot of contents before and after, and only keeps the middle part, just like the Heart Sutra translated by Master Xuanzang. In the Tibetan scriptures, there is a ceremony, in which it is obviously mentioned that this commandment means not to kill, not only not to kill, but also to kill all life except human beings.

(2) Do not take it.

According to the requirements of the layman's precept, even if there is theft, it depends on the value of stolen goods, and more than a few RMB will make a fundamental precept; If the value is not enough, it is not a violation of the fundamental precept, but a violation of the branch precept. However, the precepts of Baguanting stipulate that you can't steal anything big or small, and there is no difference in value between breaking the precepts. You can't even steal a needle, a thread or a mouthful of rice, so you must guard against delay.

(3) fornication

The lewdness of the precepts of Baguanting is quite different from that of laity. Although it is not mentioned in the Chinese translation of the Buddhist sutra Ba Zhai Jing, it is mentioned in the Tibetan version of the Buddhist sutra, the Eight Officials Pavilion Ring and many other classics: when observing the Eight Officials Pavilion Ring, not only can you not commit adultery, you can't have non-Sanskrit (normal husband and wife life), but you should even stop staring at each other deliberately because of greed.

(4) False

The boundary between the five precepts and slanderers is not all slanderers, but the master method. But the precepts of Baguanting require that not only the master's laws can't be said, but all slanders, including jokes, can't be said. Because the precepts of Baguanting are stricter than those of laity. If you don't quit at all, you still quit, so be careful.

(5) Drinking

In terms of drinking, there is no difference between the precepts of Baguanting and the five precepts of lay people. In the ceremony that requires fasting, there are also things that are released, that is, except wine, as long as they are eaten, they can play the same role as wine, and things that can make people intoxicated and crazy, including drugs and anesthetics, cannot be drunk or eaten. However, if you need surgery and anesthesia on the day of fasting in Baguanting, you can give permission.

(6) Dress up for singing and dancing

Singing, dancing, music, flowers, vines, painting incense and decorating colors are the seven commandments, but they are one of the eight official pavilions. Because under normal circumstances, it is normal for family members to sing and dance, play music and dress up with incense, so the requirements of the Buddha are also relatively relaxed. In Baguanting, if all seven precepts are violated, one confession is fine, not one. However, among the precepts of becoming a monk, many of them are combined separately, because the requirements of becoming a monk are strict.

During the observation of Baguanting ring, cosmetics such as perfume, lipstick, white powder and eyebrow pencil were used. Should not be used, but emollients to protect the skin should be able to. It is no problem to wear jewelry that you usually wear on the day of fasting in Baguanting, but you can't wear jewelry that you don't wear at ordinary times but wear on the day of fasting.

It is also said in Faji that there were many cosmetics in India more than two thousand years ago-lipstick, nail polish, eye shadow and so on. Now people like to use these things very much. After using these cosmetics, on the one hand, it will affect centrifugation, on the other hand, it will easily lead to arrogance, so the Buddha explicitly forbids using them during fasting. Violating the boundaries of this commandment means deliberately singing, dancing, drawing, etc. Usually walking in the street, or when family members watch TV and play music, even if the ordained person hears music, as long as he doesn't listen on purpose, there will be no problem and he won't break the precepts. If you have to sing, dance, etc. On the day of keeping precepts because of work, you can also support the three treasures.

(7) A tall and spacious bed

The so-called "high" in etiquette means that the feet of the bed are more than one elbow high. The so-called "leniency" in etiquette should be caused by the different understanding of translators. There is no mention of "Guang" in the Eight Chapters of the Buddha.

And say "good". The so-called good bed or wide bed refers to expensive and luxurious beds and bedding that are not suitable for ordinary people.

(8) Non-seasonal food

After noon, you can't eat milk, yogurt and other solid foods and drinks that can satisfy your hunger. You can drink tea and water in the afternoon.

There are two reference methods for the regulation of noon time: one is depending on the sun time. In Chengdu, it's 1 04 in the afternoon, but be conservative and don't eat after one o'clock. As for the noon time in other cities, it is easy to find it online. The other is calculated according to the calendar of the time wheel King Kong. In the past, Ruyibao, the French king, calculated the noon time of Larong Buddhist College in this way, which was 1 p.m. 18. After deducting the reserved figure of three minutes, we usually take 1: 15 as noon. The difference between the figures measured by the French king and those calculated by modern astronomy is only 36 seconds. In the Time Wheel King Kong, there are many simple, simple and very accurate calculation methods.

Eight, eight Guanting's precepts and merits.

The Tibetan version claims that the Buddhist scriptures of the precepts in the Eight Guanting Pavilion describe the merits and demerits of the precepts in metaphors:

The first metaphor: Even though the rivers of the four major rivers, such as Ganges, can be measured by a cup or a drop, the merits of observing the precepts of Baguanting for one day cannot be measured, which is incredible.

The second metaphor: if the South Station is not full of arhats, some people will feed so many arhats with all kinds of jewelry, food, clothes and so on for life. Its merits and demerits are not as good as one thousandth, one thousandth or even one thousandth of the merits and demerits of Baguanting in one day.

Anyone who has read Wan Ye Jing knows that a real arhat's merits and demerits are inconceivable, even if he provides a vegetarian meal, and the merits and demerits of supporting the arhat all over the world for life are even unimaginable.

In addition, there is a metaphor in many Buddhist scriptures: in repeated robberies, a man supported the ten Buddhas in the third world with all kinds of gold, silver and jewels from all over the world. Compared with the virtue of observing only one precept day and night in the late French era, the virtue of the preceptor far exceeds that of the provider.

This metaphor is about keeping only one commandment, but not the eight official pavilions. It is conceivable that if we adhere to the precepts of the Eight Guanting Pavilion every month, not to mention its merits. If there is centrifugal force and bodhicitta, will its merits be measured by ordinary people?

The precepts of the Tantric Eight Official Pavilion are very strict-no talking, eating once a day, and so on. It must be difficult to keep them working, so we generally don't publicize it. At present, the most suitable discipline for everyone is the Eight Official Pavilion.

It's important to turn around after the precepts. The difference between Mahayana and Hinayana lies not in the essence of law, but in initiation and refuge. Even if the ceremony is taken from the Hinayana classics, whether it is actually Mahayana or Hinayana depends on initiation and centering, so the initiation in front and the centering behind are of great significance.
