Red coral is an organic gem with pleasant color and bright texture, which grows in the deep sea from 0/00 to 2000 meters away from human/kloc. It is listed as one of the three organic gems alongside pearls and amber, and it is also listed as one of the seven treasures in the oriental Buddhist scriptures. It has been regarded as a rich and auspicious thing since ancient times. Natural red coral is formed by the accumulation of coral polyps, which grow very slowly and cannot be regenerated. However, red corals only grow in several straits (Taiwan Province Strait, Japanese Strait, Baltic Strait and Mediterranean Sea) and are restricted by sea areas, so red corals are extremely precious. Ornaments made of red coral are very popular with collectors, and the value-added of fine red coral is very rapid, which is valued by collectors.

Industrial and commercial personnel said that operators must obtain the Permit for the Operation and Utilization of Aquatic Wild Animals issued by China Fishery Administration and Fishing Port Supervision Administration and the business license issued by the industrial and commercial department before they can operate red coral.

Coral is a rare and endangered marine species. 1988, China listed red coral as a national key protected animal. In 2008, CITES also listed red coral in Appendix III to restrict its international trade.
