(1) Continue to cultivate main branches and lateral branches.
The cultivation of main branches and lateral branches of walnut trees at the first fruit stage has not been completely completed, so the cultivation of main branches and lateral branches should be strengthened at this time. For the evacuation layered form, on the basis of completing the first main branch, the second and third main branches should be selected in time, and the appropriate side branches should be selected in time on each main branch. For the naturally happy appearance, it is necessary to continue to cultivate the main branches and side branches. After the main branch is selected, the lateral branches at all levels should be selected and cultivated in time to complete the plastic surgery process as soon as possible.
(2) Strengthen the cultivation of fruiting branches
The fruiting branch group is the basic unit of fruit tree growth, development, flowering and fruiting, and consists of fruiting branches, developing branches and perennial branches. The size and shape of fruit branches vary with the position on the trunk and the space on the crown. Small fruit branches are mainly arranged at the front end of the main branch or the periphery of the tree crown, middle fruit branches are mainly arranged between the main branch and the tree crown, and big fruit branches are mainly arranged at the back and inner cavity of the main branch. Small fruit branches should be arranged between large and medium-sized fruit branches to supplement space. Young trees with vigorous growth should leave as few or no upright fruiting branches as possible. Results There are three methods to cultivate branches: first releasing and then shrinking, first cutting and then releasing, first shrinking and then cutting.
(3) Handling of different branches
① The phenomenon that the back branch is stronger than the back branch is common in late-bearing walnuts and some early-bearing walnuts. If not controlled, it will affect the development of branches, even make the original branches die, leading to tree disorder. The treatment method of back branches can be determined according to the specific situation, and the results can be retained for the back branches with moderate growth and flower buds. For the back branch that is vigorous and has formed the phenomenon of "backward pulling", if it has surpassed the original branch and does not affect the development of the upper branch, the back branch can be used to replace the original branch. If the back branch has affected the growth of the upper branch, which leads to the obvious weakening of the growth of the upper branch, the back branch should be cut off, and the branch should be raised to promote the development of the upper branch. If the back branches are weak, flower buds have been formed, which can be gradually transformed into fruiting branches.
(2) Most of the auxiliary branches are temporary, and can be temporarily reserved for use without affecting the growth of the main branches. If it affects the growth of main and lateral branches, it should be retracted in time and transformed into large and medium-sized fruiting branches. If it is too dense, it can be thinned appropriately. When pruning auxiliary branches, we should master the following principles: (1) Whether the auxiliary branches stay or not will not affect the growth and development of the main and lateral branches; Auxiliary branches should be smaller and shorter than the nearby main branches and side branches, and no extended branches should be left. If the auxiliary branch is too strong, it should be properly controlled to retract or weaken. Auxiliary branches with fruits can be transformed into large and medium-sized fruiting branches by measures such as short cutting, but the growth and development of main branches and side branches cannot be affected.
(3) In the early fruiting period of walnuts, the treatment of walnuts should be based on specific conditions. If there is reserved space, it can be cultivated into fruiting branches by cutting and coring in summer. For long branches that have no retained value, they should be thinned out from the base in time. The long branches of early-bearing walnuts often produce multiple fruiting branches in the second year, but they gradually weaken from top to bottom. In the third year, the fruiting branches in the middle and lower parts are easy to dry up and die, which leads to the outward migration of fruiting parts and drooping branches. In order to overcome this shortcoming, it can be cut short in spring and summer or cored in summer to make it a strengthened fruiting branch group and make full use of the space in the crown cavity.
④ The treatment of developing branches and secondary branches of other branches of walnut is basically the same as that of young trees, but at this time, we should focus on controlling the outward migration of fruiting parts and cultivating fruiting branches.
