How to prune potted osmanthus
Osmanthus fragrans potted plants are mostly pruned into single stem type. Start with the seedlings and choose the trunk. When the trunk reaches a predetermined height, the top is removed to germinate 3 -5 lateral branches to form a crown. Prune once a year before germination in winter and spring. Cut off diseased dead branches, over-dense branches and thin branches, and properly truncate plants with strong upper part and weak lower part and poor tree shape, so that adventitious buds will sprout at the lower part and new branches will grow. But pruning should not be excessive, otherwise it is easy to sprout branches and affect the number of flowers. Osmanthus fragrans will grow into deformed plants if it is not pruned and shaped for a long time. For this kind of plants, the following pruning methods can be adopted: 1. For plants that grow very tall and lack leaves at the lower part, the trunk can be cut off by more than 2/3 or 3/4 to promote the growth of new branches at the lower part. In the coming year, it is found that long branches, dislocated branches and other random branches should be cut off to form a full and natural shape. 2. For top-heavy, leafy branches, the upper strong branches should be cut off about 1/4 every year, and at the same time, the dense branches, sparse branches, pest branches, leafy branches and old branches that cannot bloom should be cut off to facilitate ventilation and light transmission. Water and fertilizer management should be strengthened for all the sweet-scented osmanthus trees after pruning and shaping. After shaping, it is found that there are clustered buds at the base or middle of the trunk that affect the tree shape, and the buds should be erased in time.
