Jiang Suchun’s personal story

On the evening of March 7, 2003, Jiang Suchun’s phone suddenly rang. Jiang Suchun picked up the phone and heard the urgent voice of Director Wang of the hospital's medical department: "Professor Jiang, there is a critically ill patient. The director invites you to come to the first ward for emergency treatment."

The condition is an order! Putting down the phone, Jiang Suchun rushed to the ward in three steps at a time. Dean Lu Zhanxiu told him that these patients from Shanxi showed symptoms of pneumonia and became ill after returning from Guangdong. Jiang Suchun's heart suddenly felt "grateful". Previously, I had only heard of SARS in Guangdong, but this was the first time I heard about it in Beijing. While he was thinking about how to rescue him, Dean Lu said: "Professor Jiang, at your age, you can just sit outside the ward and give instructions!" As soon as he finished speaking, the doctor who came out of the ward reported that the patient's condition was very serious. not good. Jiang Suchun said to the dean: "No, I have to enter the ward to direct the rescue!" But the dean refused. The doctor next to him also advised him: "Professor, it's very dangerous inside. You'd better not go in. We'll just come out and report to you." Jiang Suchun was anxious at that time and said, "How can a doctor save the patient if he doesn't see him?" Jiang Suchun thought. Not much more, I quickly put on the isolation gown, specially put two pieces of gauze under the mask, and rushed into the ward. By this time, the patient had been intubated and was in critical condition. He immediately organized rescue operations, and six doctors took turns performing extracorporeal cardiac massage on the patient. At that moment, the aerosol particles contaminated the entire ward, and all people participating in the rescue were at risk of being infected, especially after tracheal intubation, which is more toxic and pathogenic. But at that time, no one could care about this. They only thought about saving the patient. Despite their best efforts, the patient could not be saved because of his age and serious condition.

After stopping the rescue, Jiang Suchun immediately told two things: First, let the nurses prepare the corpses and strengthen protection to prevent corpse excrement from leaking out and polluting the environment; second, all personnel should take a shower first and put away their clothes and shoes when they go down. You can go home only after changing and disinfecting your socks. It was already past 1 a.m. when he left the ward. Jiang Suchun wandered around the yard for a long time, thinking about the next day's work. When he returned home, he took off all his clothes, shoes and socks in a ventilated area on the balcony. After taking a shower, he quietly slept in another room and opened the window. Jiang Suchun was afraid of infecting his wife with the pathogen.

Jiang Suchun has watched infectious diseases all his life. Diseases as severe as SARS are rare. The patient had eaten half an hour ago, so why did he die so quickly? What exactly is this disease caused by? This can only rely on science and find evidence from pathogens and pathology. He immediately suggested to the hospital leaders to conduct an autopsy as soon as possible. Since there is a large amount of virus remaining in the patient's body, if the chest is opened, the virus will spread everywhere, making the risk greater than ever before! Taking into account his age, the hospital leaders resolutely refused to allow him to participate in the autopsy work. But Jiang Suchun still insisted on entering the autopsy room, and conducted detailed research on various tissues and organs with virus, immunity, and microbiology experts, and completed the autopsy of the first SARS patient in Beijing as quickly as possible, in order to carry out SARS research. Accumulated valuable first-hand information. After the autopsy, the hospital leaders considered that Jiang Suchun was old and had been tired for days, and were afraid that he would be infected, so they gave me a "death order" and resolutely asked him to withdraw from the front line. He told the hospital leaders: "I am a doctor, and the doctor's position is on the front line of treatment. At this critical moment, how can I evacuate?" In the next few days, Jiang Suchun went to the ward four times. I stayed there for several hours at a time to see a doctor and discuss it. On the evening of March 14, 2003, Jiang Suchun suddenly felt cold, and this time the cold was different from usual, accompanied by a slight chill. The body temperature was 37.6 degrees Celsius! He realized something might be wrong. He immediately reported to the medical department, and the hospital leaders asked Jiang Suchun to be hospitalized immediately. He said: "Isolate and observe for one day and wait and see. If the fever does not go down tomorrow, I will be hospitalized immediately." The next afternoon, Jiang Suchun's fever not only did not go down, but her body temperature actually rose. Walk! Hospitalized immediately. His wife insisted on sending him to the ward. Jiang Suchun considered that she was also in her 70s, and the ward was a contaminated area. The more contact she had, the more dangerous she would be. He only agreed to send her downstairs, but his wife refused and kept following him. Jiang Suchun wanted to block her back, but she quickly followed him and held his arm tightly with both hands. Jiang Suchun saw her biting her lip, tears welling up in her eyes. Jiang Suchun's nose suddenly felt sour. He simply made it clear and said: "I may not be able to come back this time. You know me. Didn't I come here the first two times? I will fight for it. At present, what we need is strength and reason. You go back!" She Stopped. Jiang Suchun walked to the ward. It was raining lightly at the time. He touched his head, and the coolness made him sober. Jiang Suchun has walked this road for more than 40 years. It usually takes 5 minutes to walk, but this time it took 15 minutes.

After examination, the epidemic history, body temperature and chest X-ray were consistent. Jiang Suchun was diagnosed with SARS! After lying on the hospital bed, he calmed down, made up his mind, and made "three rules" to himself: keep a calm mind, eat well, sleep well, and prepare to overcome the difficulties! First of all, I am a patient and I must abide by hospital rules and strive for reasonable treatment. The next day, when the director and head nurse made rounds on the ward, Jiang Suchun proposed: I will lie down while you stand and discuss; I will raise my hand and you will make the final decision. Lying in the hospital bed, Jiang Suchun asked medical staff about the situation every day, collected information about SARS prevention and control from various sources, and started writing articles.

During the more than 20 days he was hospitalized, he wrote "Atypical Pneumonia Can Be Prevented and Treated" in response to society's fear of SARS; and "Prevention and Treatment of SARS Hospital Infection" in response to hospital infections. Through 9 popular science research papers with more than 50,000 words, he told everyone about his experiences and lessons, and put forward some views and opinions on the prevention and treatment of SARS. At the same time, the medical staff were also guided in the ward to complete the subject of temperature and humidity surveys in the ward. It is recommended that treating doctors and head nurses write papers summarizing their experience in SARS protection. All papers have been published, and some have been reprinted many times.

After Jiang Suchun was hospitalized, the hospital leaders instructed him to treat him at all costs. The president and political commissar personally hosted expert meetings three times to study his treatment plan. Since SARS is a new infectious disease and there is no effective medicine, all treatment work relies on front-line doctors to find their own solutions. Lying on the hospital bed, Jiang Suchun never forgot the question he had been thinking about when rescuing the first patient: drawing on the experience of serum treatment for infectious diseases to try to use convalescent serum from SARS patients to treat critically ill patients. Injecting the convalescent serum of SARS patients into other SARS patients at an early stage can deal with the virus, but it requires time and safety, and is risky. It can easily cause allergic reactions, and may be infected with pathogens such as hepatitis C and AIDS, and even Some unknown new viruses may be implanted. Moreover, serum has never been used to treat SARS. As a doctor, Jiang Suchun knew the risks involved. Since it was an experiment, it might fail. But I am already 74 years old, so it doesn’t matter if I fail.

He told his wife this idea, and she, who is also a doctor, said very worriedly: "No one can tell whether there is a virus in the serum of convalescent patients. I will try my best to see if I can avoid losing." Don't lose." But Jiang Suchun had made up his mind and said to her: "I know there is a risk, but I have thought about it carefully. Besides, if I don't take the risk, who will take the risk?" In those days, Jiang Suchun himself didn't. Thought a lot. Counting all of his life, he has saved many people. If he can use his own body to help treat more SARS patients at the end of his life, it will be worth taking this old life. ! After Jiang Suchun made up his mind, he made a serious report to the dean and political commissar on the scientific nature, feasibility and necessity of serum therapy over the phone, and insisted on testing it on himself immediately. At Jiang Suchun's insistence, the hospital leaders and relevant experts finally decided to adopt my suggestion after repeated studies, and immediately sent people to the epidemic areas in Guangdong twice to search for serum. In those days, the hospital leaders organized many discussions and expert consultations in order to treat him. Especially when he heard that seven recovered SARS patients were willing to donate serum for him, Jiang Suchun was moved to tears. As a doctor, faced with so many people's concerns, he felt there was no reason not to make more contributions to the fight against SARS? On the morning of March 22, 2003, Jiang Suchun was lying calmly on the hospital bed, ready for everything. In order to prevent accidents, the nurse pushed the ambulance to the door of the ward. The department director and head nurse stood in front of his bed, carefully observing the situation, and kept telling the nurse: "Slow down the infusion, slow down the infusion." Drop by drop of serum slowly flowed into my blood vessels. It took more than an hour to infuse 50 ml of serum. After being injected with the serum, Jiang Suchun's body did not show any abnormal reactions. A week later, he felt that his breathing became easier. With other drug treatments, he miraculously recovered and was discharged after 23 days in the hospital. Later, Hong Kong, Shenzhen, and Singapore also used serum therapy to recover and discharge dozens of SARS patients. Practice has proven that serum therapy is effective and can be regarded as a life-saving therapy for some severe SARS patients. As the news spread, many recovered SARS patients rushed to donate blood. The Chinese nation's spirit and custom of helping others, unity and friendship spread across the land of China.

As a member of the Communist Party and a people's military doctor, Jiang Suchun did a lot in the fight against SARS, and thus received many honors from the party and the people. General Secretary Hu Jintao made special instructions and gave him a lot of encouragement. He said with emotion: “This is not only care and encouragement for me personally, but also care and love for the vast number of medical staff on the front lines of the fight against SARS.

I must keep in mind General Secretary Hu’s instructions, work harder and harder during my lifetime, and dedicate everything I have to the cause of infectious diseases, to our great motherland and people! ”
