ancient times
In the Spring and Autumn Period, it belonged to the eastern territory of Yue State, and in the Warring States Period, Shanghai belonged to Chu State. It used to be the fief of Huang Xie, the king of Chu. The Huangpu River, which runs through modern Shanghai, is also called Chunjiang Shen, so Shanghai is nicknamed Shen. During the Jin Dynasty in the 4th and 5th centuries A.D., residents in Songjiang (now Suzhou River) and coastal areas mostly made a living by fishing. They created a bamboo fishing tool called Hu, and because the river was called blasphemy at that time, the lower reaches of Songjiang were called Hu, and later it was changed to Hu. "Shanghai" is named because it is located in Shanghai Pu, a tributary of Songjiang (Wusong River).
Huating County was established in the middle of the Tang Dynasty, located in Songjiang District today, which is the beginning of the establishment of a county in Shanghai. At the end of Song Dynasty, Shanghai Town was established. 1292, the Yuan Dynasty established Shanghai County, which is located on the Huangpu River in the center of Shanghai today and is generally considered as the starting point of Shanghai's history. During the Ming Dynasty, Shanghai gradually prospered. 1553 Shanghai City was built, reaching the Japanese invaders (formerly Heather District, now merged with Huangpu District) and under the jurisdiction of Songjiang Prefecture in Nanzhili. Songjiang District is the largest cotton spinning center in China. In addition to Huating County, there are Qingpu County (now Qingpu District) and jinshanwei (now Jinshan District). Following the Ming system, the Qing Dynasty was subordinate to Songjiang Prefecture in jiangnan province and established Jiang Customs.
