Generally, before pruning after flowering, the main branches and secondary branches are properly cut, and the cut buds are left, which can be selected according to the development direction of the branches in the future. However, attention should be paid to the balance between the main branch and the auxiliary branch, and the principle of strong branch and weak branch should be implemented. In general, the annual branches of 1/3 of the main branches or auxiliary branches are generally cut off, so that the lower side branches grow in large numbers.
After pruning the side branches, the principle of strong branches and weak branches is implemented. The lateral branches of plum trees should be updated once a year, and they should not grow densely and freely. For the whole canopy, the amount of pruning at a time should not be too large. If a big branch is removed, the side branch should be lightly pruned; if no big branch is removed, the side branch can be lightly pruned. Side branch pruning is mainly based on thinning branches, supplemented by short cutting. For the cross branches and overlapping branches in the crown, one branch should be removed and one branch should be left, and the positions of the other branches must be appropriate. Dense branches and slender branches should be thinned or shortened, and the amount of pruning should vary from1/3 to 2/3 of the branch length according to the specific situation of the tree. The vegetative branches that grew in that year were generally full and about 20 cm long. If no such branches appear or the number is small, no branches grow in vain, which is a sign of weakness. The top of this vegetative branch on a weak tree should not be cut or omitted. Flowering branches can be divided into four types: long flowering branches (more than 20 cm, with few flower buds), middle flowering branches (10 ~ 19 cm) and short flowering branches (less than 9 cm, with many flower buds), and bouquets branches (about 2 cm, with no leaf buds, only flower buds). In principle, the flower branches are not pruned, but the crossed and overlapping flower branches should be pruned appropriately.
Plum branches are thick, and branches tend to grow densely in the growing season, which often leads to poor crown permeability and scattered nutrients, which affects flower bud differentiation. Therefore, it is necessary to remove the sprouting buds in time and properly prune the new shoots that are too dense or hinder the main branches. In addition, in early and mid-June, the measures of "twisting the top and the tip" can be taken to appropriately inhibit excessive growth, promote multi-differentiation of flower buds, and achieve the purpose of flowering more and improving ornamental value.
