Chongqing Medical University ranks 187th among national undergraduate institutions in 2022 and 4th among universities in the province.

The school was founded in 1956 when Shanghai First Medical College (now Fudan University Shanghai Medical College) was relocated to Chongqing. It was originally named Chongqing Medical College and was renamed Chongqing Medical University in 1985.

The school is one of the first units approved by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council with the right to confer doctoral and master's degrees, and is one of the first batch of demonstration bases for studying in China approved by the Ministry of Education. In 2015, the school became the first university to be established by the Chongqing Municipal People's Government, the National Health Commission (formerly the National Health and Family Planning Commission) and the Ministry of Education. In 2016, it became the first batch of projects approved by the "Higher Education Discipline Innovation and Talent Introduction Plan" ("111 Plan") One of the local universities.
