Shimen county is located in the north of Hunan, at the junction of Hunan and Hubei, and in the middle reaches of Lishui River. Lixian and Linli counties in the east, Cili and Taoyuan in the south, Sangzhi and Hefeng in the west and Wufeng and Songzi in the north. Known as the "gateway to northern Hunan". Grain crops are mainly rice and corn, and cash crops are mainly citrus, tea, vegetables, tobacco, cotton and rape. 1978, Shimen was listed as the national tung oil production base county; 1985 was listed as the national tobacco production base county; 1986 The State Planning Commission, the Economic Commission, the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries, the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation and the Ministry of Commerce jointly agreed that Shimen was the tea export base county, and 1987 was designated as the first batch of organic tea production base counties in Hunan Province. 1987 is listed as a famous, special and excellent commodity production base county in Hunan Province, and is designated as Matouyang base county in Hunan Province. 1989, the Ministry of Agriculture determined Shimen as the base county for kiwifruit resource development; From 65438 to 0996, Shimen became the largest key base county of alpine vegetables in Hunan Province. Since 1980s, Shimen Citrus has developed year by year, becoming one of the citrus commodity production base counties in Hunan Province. 1998, Hunan Provincial Bureau of Statistics identified Shimen as "the first county of fruit production in Hunan Province". In 2000, China Citrus Society awarded Shimen the title of "the first county of early-maturing tangerine in China".

Shimen industry has formed a regional industrial system with energy, building materials, chemicals, mining and food as the main body, and a variety of industrial categories are basically matched. The first phase of Shimen Power Plant, a national key project, has been connected to the grid for power generation, and Zaoshi Reservoir is under construction. The transportation in the county is convenient, and highways extend in all directions, where Shichang Railway and Liu Zhi Railway meet.
