Shimen county is located in the north of Hunan, at the junction of Hunan and Hubei, and in the middle reaches of Lishui River. Lixian and Linli counties in the east, Cili and Taoyuan in the south, Sangzhi and Hefeng in the west and Wufeng and Songzi in the north. Known as the "gateway to northern Hunan". The county covers a total area of 3,973 square kilometers, including 663,000 mu of cultivated land, 3,509,300 mu of woodland and 208,600 mu of water. Since 1980s, Shimen Citrus has developed year by year, becoming one of the citrus commodity production base counties in Hunan Province. 1998, Hunan Provincial Bureau of Statistics identified Shimen as "the first county of fruit production in Hunan Province". In 2000, China Citrus Society awarded Shimen the title of "the first county of early-maturing tangerine in China".

Shimen industry has formed a regional industrial system with energy, building materials, chemicals, mining and food as the main body, and a variety of industrial categories are basically matched. The first phase of Shimen Power Plant, a national key project, has been connected to the grid for power generation, and Zaoshi Reservoir is under construction.
