He graduated from the former National Central University Medical College (now Nanjing University) in 1941 and was elected as an academician of China Academy of Engineering in 1996. He devoted his whole life to the creation and development of orthopaedic surgery, and made outstanding contributions to China's orthopaedic medicine becoming one of the international advanced ranks. He broke the traditional medical viewpoint and renamed "plastic surgery" as "orthopaedic surgery", thus expanding the scope of treatment. The "Zhang's penis reconstruction" invented by him is called "China drum technology" by international plastic surgery colleagues.
