What are the cultivation and management techniques for Yuqingzhi Weeping Cherry? Where is it suitable for planting?

The current Jiangxi Lvnong Agricultural Development Co., Ltd. introduces the suitable planting environment and cultivation management of Yuqing weeping cherry as follows:

Yuqing weeping cherry is a temperate and subtropical tree species with a happy nature. Sunshine and warm and humid climate conditions, with certain cold resistance. The soil requirements are not strict. It should grow in loose, fertile, well-drained sandy loam, but it is not intolerant to saline-alkali soil. The root system is shallow, avoid low-lying areas where water accumulates. It has certain cold and drought tolerance, but has weak resistance to smoke and wind, so it is not suitable for planting in coastal areas with typhoons.

1. Management and maintenance after planting

Weeping cherry saplings are susceptible to drought damage after planting. In addition to sufficient irrigation during planting, they need to be irrigated every 8 to 10 days in the future. Keep the soil moist and free of standing water. The soil should be loosened promptly after irrigation. To reduce water evaporation, it is best to cover the surface thinly with grass. Within 2 to 3 years after planting, in order to prevent the trunk from drying out, it can be wrapped with straw. Once the sapling grows new roots and gradually becomes more adaptable to the environment, it is no longer needed.

2. Management and maintenance during the growth period

Yuqing weeping cherry needs to be fertilized twice a year, preferably acidic fertilizer. One is winter fertilizer, applying organic fertilizers such as bean cakes, chicken manure and decomposed fertilizers in winter or early spring; the other is applying quick-acting fertilizers such as ammonium phosphate, ferrous sulfate, superphosphate and so on after the flowers fall. The root system of Yuqing Weeping Cherry has a shallow distribution and requires good drainage and air permeability. Therefore, people, animals, and vehicles must not touch the soil around the tree, especially within the root distribution range. Trampling by pedestrians will also weaken the tree, shorten its lifespan, and even cause root rot and death.

3. Pruning management and maintenance

The pruning of Yuqing weeping cherry is mainly to remove withered branches, leggy branches, overlapping branches and diseased and insect branches. Generally, when many branches grow on the trunk of a weeping cherry tree during heavy rain or clear weather, some strong branches should be retained and the rest should be cut off from the base to facilitate ventilation and light transmission. After pruning, the wounds of the pruned branches should be disinfected with medicine in time to prevent the invasion of germs after rain and cause rot. After long-term exposure to the sun, the bark of Yuqing weeping cherry trees is prone to aging and damage, causing rot. It should be removed and disinfected in time. Afterwards, use leaf mold soil and charcoal powder to wrap the rotten parts to restore normal physiological functions.

4. Prevention and control of diseases and insect pests

The main diseases and insect pests of Yuqing weeping cherry include gum disease, root nodule, aphids, red spider mites, scale insects, etc. Gum disease is caused by moths burrowing into tree trunks to lay eggs. You can dig out the eggs with a sharp knife, improve the soil, and strengthen water and fertilizer management. Root nodule disease will cause the roots of the diseased tree to fail to grow normally. No matter how fertilized the tree is, the tree will still be weak. Therefore, the tumor must be removed in time, the soil must be disinfected, and the soil must be improved with leaf mold, charcoal powder, and microorganisms. For diseases and insect pests such as aphids, red spider mites, and scale insects, prevention should be the priority. Spray 3 to 4 times a year, the first time before flowering, the second time after flowering, and the third time in July to August.
