What are the pruning methods for figs?

Figs are perennial trees and are known to many friends because of their sweet, delicious and nutritious fruits. Maybe you don’t know that potted figs not only have a tasting function, but also have an ornamental function, which is very unique. The editor will introduce you to the knowledge about fig shaping and pruning. Friends who are interested can learn about it.

Potted Figs

The following two methods can be used to reshape potted figs. The first is the heart-shaped pruning method. After planting, 3 to 4 buds are left at the base of the seedling trunk and cut, and 3 main branches in different directions are selected that year. Figs are light-loving tree species, and the angle of the main branches should be open. The main branches can be pulled to 60 to 70 degrees by pulling the branches. The mixed buds on each main branch will bear fruit in the second year. The length of the main branches should be controlled at about 40 centimeters, and the main branches that are too vigorous should be pinched in time in summer. When pruning in winter, keep the fruiting branches weak and strong. The three main branch extensions should be retracted and renewed year by year to control the crown and make it the right size.

The second is the horizontal ring pruning method of the main trunk. The trunk is not fixed in the first year after planting and is allowed to grow naturally. Because of its strong germination ability, multiple branches can sprout from bottom to top that year. During winter pruning, according to the distribution of the branches, select about 10 branches from bottom to top in a circular staggered pattern. After the branches are extended and grown, use thin wire to keep them along the branches. The curved lashing is horizontal to facilitate continuous results. Pay attention to thinning out overly dense and overlapping branches. The upward-growing trunk extension branches should be controlled at 1 to 1.2 meters in height. When they are too strong, they should be torn off in time. After the third year of fruiting, the horizontal fruiting branches have formed a complete ring from bottom to top around the main trunk. They can be renewed and pruned every year to maintain the fruiting ability, avoid overlapping of ring branches, and form a beautiful tree shape.
