Characteristics of roots:
1. Some roots or stems from foreign languages in English can only be found in scientific vocabulary;
2. A root usually contains multiple meanings. Most of these meanings are extensions of the original meaning. There are various ways of extension, such as expansion, contraction, rise, fall, and even metaphor, but most of them are parallel meanings (similar to synonyms);
3. Some roots can form a word independently, that is, they are a word in themselves, sometimes called roots. Such as:-facts-,-people-,-behavior-,-work-and so on.
4. Sometimes foreign roots (or stems) with the same meaning and different sources are used in different styles. For example, the Latin root (or stem) -cor- (-cordis-) of "heart" is often used to form common words; Greek root (or stem) -cardio- (-cardia-) is mostly used to form scientific vocabulary;
5. Most of the roots are monosyllabic, and only a few of them are polysyllabic;
6. The meaning of the root or the literal meaning determined by the root is always reflected in the meaning of the word to some extent, which reflects the basic meaning of the word explicitly or implicitly.
