Song Wan Academy was founded in Zhenyuan period of Tang Dynasty (785,804). According to records, Bai Juyi and Su Dongpo often visited this temple when they were in Hangzhou. Bai Juyi's poem "Night Return" includes "Thousands of pines on the green hills".
In the 11th year of Hongzhi (1498), Zhou Mu, a right-wing politician in Zhejiang Province, renamed this academy "Song Wan Academy".
