What are the characteristics of pruning young chestnut trees?
The purpose of pruning young trees is to cultivate a solid tree skeleton with appropriate branches, laying a good foundation for early fruit and high yield. The main measures for pruning young trees are:

(1) Young chestnut trees with competing branches have the characteristics of sprouting three branches, four branches and rotating branches, which is due to the top advantage of chestnut branches. The terminal bud has good quality and short internodes, such as 1/2 leaf sequence, which often has three branches and four branches; If it is 2/5 leaf order, more verticillate branches will appear. Therefore, in the process of shaping young trees, except for the branches that are too thick, they are generally not cut short, and the terminal buds extend outward to form a skeleton to expand the crown; For three branches, four branches and round branches, it is necessary to prevent competition and avoid the phenomenon of "pinching the neck"; For branches that grow too fast, the core can be picked in summer to promote the growth of branches and accelerate the formation.

(2) Properly thinning to prevent the trunk branches of young chestnut trees from lengthening, which generally grow vigorously, and the short cut is slightly heavier and easy to grow. Therefore, in the young tree stage, unless the redundant branches are properly thinned, the branchlets should be kept as much as possible to slow down the growth of the tree and promote the formation of fruit branches; Excessive thinning can easily lead to vertical growth, making the angle smaller, the crown expanding slowly, the skeleton weakening, and the result delaying.

The twigs in the inner cavity of young trees are not easy to be transformed into fruiting branches, and it is easy to disrupt the tree shape. The redundant branches should be thinned out as soon as possible.

(3) Opening angle to alleviate the growth of trees. Because the young chestnut trees are flourishing, the opening angle of the main branches is generally small, so many measures should be taken to open the main branches, such as supporting, pulling and falling, to slow down the growth of the trees and promote the results; Inward growing branches should be properly controlled or thinned, and outward growing branches should be kept as much as possible to promote the expansion of the crown.

(4) Pay attention to pruning and coring in summer, which can increase the number and grade of all branches, promote flowering and bear fruit early. Chestnut trees with fertile soil and deep soil layers often grow vigorously. If the core is removed in summer, it can inhibit the excessive elongation of new shoots and promote the enrichment of branches. In summer, coring can be carried out continuously for 2 ~ 3 times. When the new shoots grow to 40 ~ 50 cm, the first coring is carried out, and the tender shoots at the tip are cut off or pinched off by 4 ~ 5 cm. After each growth of 20 ~ 30 cm, pick the core 1 time, control the vegetative growth, promote the growth of branches twice, and form flower buds.

For those long branches and dense branches that temporarily do not need or affect ventilation and light transmission, they should be drained as soon as possible to save nutrition and promote the robust growth of trees. However, thinning should not be too heavy, and there should not be too many branches at a time, so as not to cause vertical growth, narrow the crown and delay the fruit.
