The Yongding branch of Beijing Experimental Second Primary School is located in Yongding Town, Mentougou District, on the outskirts of Beijing. The vast majority of students are children of farmers and migrant workers. After the implementation of the new curriculum reform, the school offered English classes, but until 2003, the passing rate in English was only 13.2%, and the outstanding rate was only 2.3%. English classes have always been a big problem that plagues school teaching. How to teach English well in rural primary schools? After learning from many sources and carefully comparing, they decided to open a school-based English teaching course, focusing on active English teaching methods, introducing and integrating a variety of effective English teaching methods to supplement the shortcomings of nationally prescribed courses.
The school builds a platform for students to learn English from the aspects of curriculum, teachers, environment, and activities. They cooperated with Dr. Li Ruyun, the inventor of Active English and a professor at Capital Normal University, introduced his complete curriculum system, and supplemented it with other teaching methods to establish the "Five-Dimensional English" school-based curriculum. There is a shortage of English teachers, so the school mobilizes teachers from other subjects to sign up as volunteer English teachers to take on some English teaching tasks. It also invites Li Ruyun and other university teachers to conduct systematic training for school English teachers and volunteer teachers. Under the leadership of the principal Ma Liufen, who is over 50 years old, all teachers in the school learn English, creating an unprecedented situation where teachers and students learn English together. "Daily English", English posters, English broadcasts in the morning and between classes, multimedia English teaching in the classroom... When students enter the Yongding branch of Beijing Experimental No. 2 Primary School, they are immediately surrounded by a strong English learning atmosphere. English calligraphy competitions, English knowledge competitions, self-made English tabloids... a variety of English teaching activities have greatly expanded the learning space for teachers and students.
Since 2004, the school’s English passing rate has exceeded 80%, and the excellent rate has reached 55%. Students entering junior high school said that English was the easiest subject for them to learn in middle school.
