The prototype story of The Danish Girl is the story of transsexual artist Einar Wegener and his wife Gerda Wegner in 1930s. Einar became popular in the art world as a model with his wife dressed in women's clothes, which awakened her real gender-conscious women. After some struggle, she finally got forgiveness from her wife, bravely underwent sex-change surgery and became the real Lily Wegener. Unfortunately, she died of rejection in the second stage of the operation.
