Steps of handmade chef's hat
Illustration of the steps of making chef's hat by hand:

First, measure your head.

Use a tape measure to measure the position around the forehead and above the ears that is suitable for wearing a hat. Then add an inch to this size so that the hat won't be too tight.

Find out how tall a hat you want.

You may prefer the style of short-edged chef's hat, or the appearance of harder and taller chef's hat. First estimate the brim height of the hat you want, and choose a number between 2 and 8 inches (5 and 20.3 cm). Then multiply this number by 2 and add one inch (2.54 cm).

You will use folded cloth to make edges, which is why you need to multiply the number by 2. You also need to leave some extra parts for stitching.

Third, draw the brim on the white cloth and cut it off.

Draw a rectangle on the white cloth. The first dimension you calculated is long and the second dimension is wide. Then cut out the rectangle you created. You must want a thin hat. Cotton is an ideal fabric, and two white cotton pillowcases are very effective. Before using the pillowcase, please cut it open, tear off any seams, and then iron it to make it a flat white cloth. Of course, you can also choose other fabrics prepared by yourself.

Fourth, cut out the reinforcing ribs.

Draw a rectangle on the interface. The length of the rectangle will be the first dimension you calculate (the circumference of the head plus one inch), and the width will be the exact height of the brim width you want (don't multiply this number by two or increase it by one inch), just like you did with the cloth. Cut out a rectangle with a sharp scissors.

Draw a circle on the folded fabric.

Take off the second pillowcase and cut it into a square about 2 feet ×2 feet (6mx.6m). Then fold the square in half twice to make it a quarter. Draw a curve with a pencil or pen-and-ink drawing, starting from the upper right corner, and then bending down to the right of the lower left corner by one inch (2.54 cm). This arc is a quarter of a circle and will be used as the top floppy disk part of the chef's hat. Cloth of this size can be made into a soft chef's hat. If you want fewer floppy disks, please reduce the original squares.

Sixth, cut out the circle.

Make sure that the edges of the folded cloth are aligned, and then carefully cut the multi-layer cloth along the arc with sharp scissors. Discard the remaining cloth, and then unfold the cloth. It doesn't matter if the circle is not perfect, because when you finally sew it into the edge, its edge will be hidden.

Step 7, sew the interface and the edge part.

Take out the reinforcing rib, and fold it in half longitudinally to halve its length. Then sewing by sewing machine or hand to form a seam of about 1/4 inches (0.63 cm) at the edge of the short original edge of the connection interface. Do the same thing for the brim, thus leaving two cycles.

Eight, sew the lining cloth and the brim into a circle.

Pick up the ring you made with the brim and put it in the cuff, so that its width becomes half of its original width. This will leave you with a ruffled cloth that folds on one side and exposes the edge on the other.

Nine, fold the edge

Fold the raw edge of the brim inward about 1/4 inches (0.63 cm). Make sure to fold inward instead of outward to hide the original edge and iron the brim, paying special attention to pressing the area just folded.

10. Sew the reinforcing rib into the brim.

Turn the brim over so that the seams can be seen. Then insert the stiffener or interface into the 1/4 inch (0.63cm) "cuff" you made by inserting the original edge. Sew a straight needle by hand, or sew two pieces of cloth together with a sewing machine.

1 1. Fold in a circle.

Adjust the stitch length and tension of the sewing machine to the highest setting. Then put the edge of the circular cloth under the needle and sew it completely along the circle, about a few inches away from the edge (1.25cm). This will wrinkle the top of the chef's hat.

After completion, adjust the stitch length and machine tension back to normal settings. If there is no sewing machine, please sew it with long straight stitches, and tighten it after each sewing to form wrinkles.

12. Fix the top of the hat on the cuff.

Slide the top of the hat hem into the "cuff" of your hat brim, so that the top of the hem is located at the opening of the hat brim in inches (1.25cm). Keep the hat at the top of the brim at all times to fix the top of the hat in place.

XIII. Connecting the two parts

Hand-sewn or machine-sewn around the brim where it overlaps the top of the crease is about 1/4 inches (0.63 cm) from the top edge of the brim. After you take off the pin, you will get a beautiful chef hat!

This chef's hat is finished.
