What is premature closure of cranial suture?
Congenital premature closure of cranial suture is also called cranial stenosis. Under normal circumstances, the suture between skulls must be ossified and closed in a certain time sequence. For example, if a craniosynostosis is ossified and closed prematurely before the normal age due to various reasons, the surrounding skull will have hypoplasia perpendicular to the ossified craniosynostosis, while compensatory overgrowth will occur along the ossified craniosynostosis. If the frontal suture ossifies and closes prematurely, it can lead to tricuspid valve malformation, with the frontal bone in a triangle shape and the midline in a ridge shape; Premature ossification and closure of unilateral coronal suture can lead to anterior oblique head deformity, asymmetry on both sides of skull, and unilateral frontal bone flattening backward; Premature ossification and sagittal suture closure can lead to navicular head deformity, shortening the transverse diameter of cranial cavity and increasing the anterior and posterior diameter; Premature ossification and closure of bilateral coronal suture can lead to short head deformity or pointed head deformity. The main manifestations of short head deformity are shortening the anterior and posterior diameter of cranial cavity and compensatory increase of transverse diameter. Pointed deformity is mainly manifested as the protrusion of the top of the cranial vault and the backward frontal bone. Incomplete craniofacial osteogenesis is caused by premature closure of multiple bone seams at the skull base, which is often characterized by severe retraction of the middle part of the face, exophthalmos and malocclusion. According to different clinical manifestations, it can be divided into Crouzon syndrome and Apert syndrome. If the above deformities are not treated in time, it will lead to increased intracranial pressure, visual impairment, mental retardation and mental disorders, which will seriously damage the physical and mental health of children and must be corrected by surgery in time.
