Plum tree pruning skills:
Prune and shape in time after the plum blossoms bloom in spring, remove diseased and weak branches, and leave 3 to 5 buds on each branch for short cutting. When the branches of the current year reach autumn, flower buds will appear in the leaf axils. Leave about 10 cm of these branches before winter and cut off the rest. The shape of plum blossoms is also an aspect of appreciation, so pruning should be combined with shaping to make the tree clear, tall, simple, beautiful and well-proportioned. There is a saying about plum blossoms that "no plum blossom can fill an inch". Generally, one-year-old branches can be cut off, while old branches cannot be moved. Pruning of plum blossoms usually starts from seedlings. When the seedlings grow to a height of 25 to 30 centimeters, cut off the top and leave the top 3 to 5 branches as the main branches after germination. Top the branches when they reach about 20 to 25 centimeters. After the flowers bloom in the second year, leave two or three buds at the base short. After germination, cut off dense branches and overlapping branches in time. Keep the branches until they grow to about 25 cm before topping to promote the formation of more flower branches. When pruning, pay attention to the direction of the buds. The inner buds should be left on varieties with drooping branches, and the outer buds should be left on varieties with upright or slanting branches. The cuts should be flat, so that the plum blossoms can bloom year after year.
