The Historical Evolution of Wanhua Town
Wanhua Array is a large maze combining Chinese and western styles in Yuanmingyuan, which was built in Qianlong period of Qing Dynasty. Its main feature is that it is divided into several mazes with carved brick walls four feet high, so it is called mosaic. It consists of wall array, China Pavilion, Bihua Building and back garden. This used to be a playground for feudal emperors. In the heyday of Yuanmingyuan, on the Mid-Autumn Festival night of August 15th every year, the Qing emperor sat in the Zhonghua Pavilion in the center of the array, and the ladies-in-waiting held lotus lanterns made of yellow colored silk, looking for a way to fly. The first one was rewarded by the emperor, so it was also called the Yellow Flower Array or Yellow Flower Lantern. Although the diameter distance from the entrance to the central pavilion is only more than 30 meters, it is easy to enter and exit, and it is easy to walk into a dead end. The Qing emperor sat on a high place and looked around at the lotus lanterns, which made him feel happy.

The Yellow Flower Array is a replica of the European maze, with a rectangular maze built outside and a west pavilion with a high platform and a round base in the middle. The square is 89 meters long from north to south and 59 meters wide from east to west. The total length of the array wall is1.600m, and the wall height is about1.2m.. Also called "flower array". Low walls are built everywhere, short pines are planted around them, and pavilions are built in the middle. For fun, the emperor often ordered eunuchs to play hide-and-seek in the yellow flower array and sit on the pavilion to watch.

The gate of Huanghua Garden is bell-shaped with two gates carved in brass. In the center of the garden maze is a stone pavilion with western-style seats. The yellow flower array is modeled after the maze of Europe (like the maze of Versailles in Paris, France). The garden built by the building is divided into several mazes, and the brick wall is engraved with a pattern four feet high.

The Yellow Flower Array is made up of a series of complex and changeable plant divisions, combined with fascinating traditional auspicious cartoon animals, such as bats (meaning: blessing), sika deer (meaning: Lu), cranes (meaning: longevity) and magpies (meaning: happiness), giving people a brand-new feeling.

1860 16 In October, the British and French allied forces destroyed Yuanmingyuan, and the West Building Scenic Area and Wanhua Array survived.191Kloc-0/The Qing Dynasty perished, and the people of China could not wait to enter Yuanmingyuan and demolish Wanhua Array. After the demise of the Qing Dynasty, the "Yellow Flower Array" was also demolished by China people. After 1987,

This old photo of the Yellow Flower Array was taken between 1875- 1885. As can be seen from the photos, the West Pavilion, the glass roof, the wooden columns and the white marble base in the yellow flower array. This building was not burned by the British and French allied forces in 1860. From February to September in the 22nd year of Guangxu (1896), Empress Dowager Cixi visited this array three times, calling it the Yellow Lantern or Wanhua Array. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Yellow Flower Array was razed to the ground, leaving only the mound in Zhongting.

Judging from the old photos, the yellow flower array after 1860 is well preserved, and it can be clearly seen that the wooden columns are embedded in the stone column foundation. From then on, we can know that this pavilion will never be carved out of white marble.

Looking at the top of the West Pavilion, you can clearly see the color difference between the two parts in the photo. Although it is an old photo, we can infer that the color difference is caused by the completely different building materials used in the two parts. In ancient buildings in China, the common building material for roofs is colored glass, while in other buildings in Xiyanglou Scenic Area, it can be seen that the building material used for roofs is colored glass, which fully conforms to the architectural style and habits of China gardens.
