What can a consultant offer visitors?
Note: The "counselor" in this article refers to the professional psychological counselor.

One-on-one consultation is a hidden and subjective work, and it is difficult to evaluate the results. Psychological counselors feel that they have a good chat with visitors, and visitors may not score high in feedback, while some visitors do not know what they can get through counseling, which may lead to high expectations. I often receive consulting orders after eleven o'clock in the evening, as if I saw a person who was so troubled that I couldn't sleep and needed to find a promising exit.

In China, consulting in the vocational field is a very young profession, and there is no uniform industry standard for related training and certification. Practitioners are mostly part-time, with great differences in education, work background and consulting ability. A visitor told me that she spent a long time comparing more than a dozen consultants on a website, but she still couldn't choose the most trusted one, and finally she relied on her eyes.

Therefore, as a participant and server in this job, I think it is necessary to make clear what consultants can provide for visitors in paid consultation. On the one hand, it can make consultants and visitors form a more specific contract on the results of consultation; On the other hand, it is also beneficial for consultants to measure and improve their work quality. Combining learning and practical experience, I think it can be summarized as follows for reference and supplement:

Objective and sufficient information is the premise for visitors to make decisions, but many visitors lack it. For example, if he wants to join an Internet company, he only thinks that he has a bright future and high income, but he doesn't know much about the business types, operation modes, development difficulties and job functions of Internet companies. Consultants need to collect relevant information in advance and choose the most valuable information according to the acceptance and actual needs of visitors. If they encounter new unfamiliar places in the consultation process, they should not provide information or suggestions based on subjective impressions (such as the situation of one or two friends), but should honestly indicate that this part needs to be supplemented after consultation. Of course, the consultant is not an expert in every industry, and it is impossible to be familiar with every job information, but we should know what reliable channels can obtain effective information, and these channels are also information that can be provided to visitors.

Evaluation is a shortcut to help visitors know themselves. Psychological counselors often ask visitors to do some evaluations before consultation to establish their initial impression. Although each evaluation has its own explanation, visitors are often ambiguous, feeling a little right and a little wrong, which can not be used as the direct basis for decision-making, and need further clarification and guidance from consultants. Different evaluations have different starting points, such as interest, personality and values. Although visitors can be analyzed from a certain dimension, the more you do, the better. Counselors should choose the most helpful and deepest evaluation for visitors. They can not only use the reference value of the evaluation results, but also know the limitations of the evaluation and make meaningful explanations to solve the current problems of tourists.

When people encounter difficulties, they usually feel dissatisfied with themselves and blame the problems on their own personality, family, habits and so on. Although they want to change, they always feel powerless. At this time, psychological counselors need to take a positive attitude, encourage visitors to re-examine their experiences, tap their good motives and positive efforts, and let him see that he has the potential to choose and control more things. At the same time, the counselor can also help the visitor to determine his own advantages by combing and evaluating the achievement events, guide him to consciously use and enlarge them in his future career, and constantly enhance his sense of self-efficacy.

The visitor is disturbed by a question and wants to find a definite answer, but the counselor will find that no matter what answer you give him, it will involve new questions, so it doesn't matter what the answer is. What matters is how the visitor looks at the problem, why it becomes his problem, and whether he can regard the problem as an opportunity to break through his own thinking level or ability. The latter problems will only disappear if they rise to a new level, and career development depends on it.

The dialogue between psychological counseling can touch the heart and open the mind, but it can't be immediate and save lives. Visitors must do something by themselves, promote change through actions and strengthen cognition through actions. Consultants can assist visitors to make the next action plan, check its rationality and feasibility, ensure that the task can be tracked and measured, give attention and encouragement to visitors during the support period, and gradually realize the goal of a certain stage.

Career is a process of lifelong learning and growth. For visitors, good consultation is good study, and good consultants can provide visitors with more thinking and introspection. For example, what factors affect our choice and attitude towards work? What does work mean to our life?
