Why is my computer case so noisy?
From the source of computer noise, it can be roughly divided into three parts, namely, fan noise, hard disk noise and CD-ROM noise. In addition, some computers will have vibration noise.

Personally, I think computer noise is closely related to "* * * vibration", which mainly comes from two aspects:

1, CPU fan and radiator "* * * vibration"

Usually, a high-speed rotating fan will hit the heat sink at high frequency. If the fan and heat sink are stable and suitable, the vibration and noise caused by collision can be greatly reduced. For example, holding a high-speed rotating CPU fan in your hand is far less noisy than fixing it on a heat sink, because a soft hand will absorb a lot of vibration.

According to this principle, adding 1-2 mm thick soft gasket (such as leather, rubber, etc.) between the four corners of the fan and the contact surface of the heat sink can effectively reduce the noise caused by the vibration of the fan and the heat sink.

2. "* * * vibration" occurs between the high-speed rotating hard disk and the chassis hard disk bracket.

Usually, the "click" sound when reading or writing a hard disk is generated by head seeking. The seek speed of the magnetic head in high-speed hard disk is fast, and its center of gravity is unstable due to high-speed rotation. If the chassis hard disk bracket is too thin or the screws are not fixed properly, the hard disk will collide with the chassis hard disk bracket, which will amplify the sound of head seeking and make it more penetrating.

Through many experiments, I found a very effective way to reduce this noise.

The steps are as follows:

First, remove the hard disk from the 3.5-inch hard disk shelf, and then place it horizontally in the center of the bottom layer of the 5.5-inch hard disk shelf. Do not touch metal objects around the hard disk. Put a foam pad under the hard disk tray (such as foam in the motherboard packaging box), and then simply fix the hard disk in the bracket with transparent tape to prevent it from moving back and forth.

Because the vibration of the hard disk itself is absorbed by the foam pad, the harsh "giggle" sound emitted by the hard disk when reading and writing will be greatly reduced. This method has been successfully tried on several computers and the noise reduction effect is very good.

In addition, there are other noise reduction methods, here to introduce to you:

1, the use of semiconductor radiator, which completely eliminates the noise and has good heat dissipation effect. Its disadvantages are relatively expensive, high power consumption and easy to be damaged. The condensation phenomenon on its surface may endanger the safety of the circuit board, but from the perspective of future development, it may eventually replace the cooling fan.

2. Use a drawer-type hard disk box. Hard disk box can play a certain sound insulation role, and it has its own cooling device, so you don't have to worry about the ventilation problem of hard disk, but the price is still relatively expensive (100-200 yuan).

3. Because the thin iron case is easy to vibrate, spending tens of dollars to buy a thick steel case can make your computer quieter when working.

The noise of optical drive is mainly divided into mechanical friction noise and mechanical vibration noise. In view of the above two kinds of noise of CD-ROM drive, CD-ROM drive manufacturers mainly adopt deceleration noise reduction technology and shock absorption noise reduction technology in order to minimize the noise intensity and achieve satisfactory results.

1, deceleration and noise reduction technology

Because the noise of CD-ROM drive is basically proportional to its speed, the so-called deceleration and noise reduction technology is to reduce the noise by artificially reducing the running speed of CD-ROM drive. It is not difficult for computer users to realize this technology. The "soft" method can use the third-party optical drive deceleration software, and the "hard" method can directly purchase optical drive products with speed regulation and noise reduction functions.

From the "soft" point of view, there are many common third-party optical disk slowdown software, such as optical disk tool, Nero DriveSpeed, CD Speed, DVDidle, CD-Quick Cache and so on. These tools and software are not difficult to use. The expected reading speed of a general CD-ROM drive can be achieved directly through simple settings.

While DVDidle, CD-Quick Cache and other softwares are "different". They use data pre-reading technology, that is, before playing DVD/VCD, read the data of the CD and store it in the hard disk and memory temporarily, and read the data directly from the hard disk or memory when playing, thus reducing the noise of the CD-ROM drive and prolonging its life.

In addition, using virtual cd software is also a recommended method. The commonly used optical discs are made into virtual optical disc images and stored on the hard disk, so that physical optical discs are not needed when used, which not only achieves the purpose of noise reduction, but also prolongs the service life of the optical drive.

Judging from the "hard" method, many brands of optical drives have introduced manual speed change technology in addition to special speed control software. The manual speed-changing gear can change the speed by 4 times (or more), and control the reading speed of the CD-ROM drive step by step to make its performance more stable and noise less.

For example, Apache's 52x serial variable-speed optical drive, when reading poor-quality optical discs, press the "PLAY" variable-speed key on the panel to reduce the speed of the optical drive by 4x until it is suitable. Allows you to control the reading speed of the CD-ROM drive at will to adapt to different quality CDs, enhance your error correction ability and reduce the noise of the CD-ROM drive.

Typical ones are the Great Tiger Shark CD with the technology of "cooling fingers" and "multi-speed change", the Moses "Amazing King Kong" CD with the software of "Six Fingers Friction Reduction" and the Lion King CD with the software of "Magic Wind Fixing Beads".

2. Shock absorption and noise reduction technology

In order to reduce the noise caused by the vibration of optical drive, many optical drive manufacturers have adopted many professional anti-vibration and noise reduction technologies.

Commonly used are ABS (Automatic Balance System), DDSS (Dual Dynamic Anti-seismic Suspension System), DAAS (Automatic Detection, Analysis and Adaptation System) and ARS (Acoustic Noise Suppression System).

The technical core of ABS is to arrange a set of steel ball bearings under the tray of optical drive. When the optical disc vibrates, the steel ball automatically slides to the lighter part under the action of centrifugal force, which plays a balancing role, so that the optical disc always keeps running in a horizontal state and achieves the effect of shock absorption and noise reduction.

The technical core of DDSS is to use 2 ~ 3 anti-vibration devices and dynamic dampers inside the CD-ROM drive to effectively absorb the vibration and noise caused by the high-speed rotation of the spindle motor of the CD-ROM drive.

The technical core of DAAS is to automatically adjust the rotating speed and laser head of the CD-ROM drive according to the characteristics of various CDs, so as to read CDs with different qualities smoothly, thus effectively controlling the vibration of the CD-ROM drive and reducing the noise, which is known as "stepless speed change".

The technical core of ARS is to achieve the purpose of noise reduction and suppression by improving some parts of the optical drive.

It is worth mentioning that ASUS's Silent King series optical drives have recently adopted two new noise reduction technologies-DDSS II (second generation double-layer suspension dynamic shock-proof technology) and AFFM (airflow field alignment technology).

DDSS Ⅱ technology, which is inherited from the first generation of ASUS DDSS, can effectively reduce the vibration of products, thus improving the stability of product operation and the quality and speed of reading films. However, there is also a seek motor. Due to technical and cost reasons, the motor does not use liquid bearing motor, which is the sound we usually hear from the hard disk. With the acceleration of spindle motor speed, the seek motor can work harmoniously and exert its potential only after acceleration. At present, the noise of most hard disks is mainly caused by this seek motor, and the sound of hard disks from different manufacturers is also different.

In order to reduce the hard disk noise, many hard disk manufacturers are really "eight immortals crossing the sea", combining soft and hard, and making their own killer. For example, in the aspect of "hardware", a new type of liquid bearing motor is adopted, the internal structure of hard disk is improved again, washers made of materials that absorb vibration and noise, sound insulation foam, etc. In the aspect of "software", their respective noise reduction technical schemes are introduced. Let's get a general idea of these methods.

1, liquid bearing motor technology

The spindle motor and seek motor inside the hard disk drive the operation of the hard disk, which is also the source of noise. Ball bearing motors were used in early hard disk motors. At that time, due to the low speed of the hard disk, the noise was very small. However, with the increase of hard disk speed, ball bearing motor has brought many problems, such as wear, temperature and noise increase, and has become the main source of hard disk noise, which obviously has not adapted to the requirements of hard disk development. In this case, hard disk manufacturers have successively introduced hard disks with new liquid bearing motors.

The technology of hydrodynamic bearing motor has been used in precision machinery industry in the past, and its technical core is to use mucosal liquid-oil bearings and replace balls with oil films. Compared with the traditional ball bearing hard disk, the advantages of liquid bearing hard disk are obvious. The first is noise reduction and cooling. Avoid the direct friction between the ball and the bearing metal surface, and minimize the noise and heat generation of the hard disk; The second is to reduce vibration and noise. Oil film can effectively absorb vibration and improve the seismic capacity of hard disk; The third is to reduce wear and improve the reliability and service life of hard disks.

Seagate produced the world's first FDB motor in 1996, and then introduced the first hard disk product with liquid bearing motor. So far, FDB cars have developed to the sixth generation. At present, desktop hard disk manufacturers Maituo, Seagate, Western Digital, Hitachi (formerly IBM hard disk), Samsung, notebook hard disk manufacturers Fujitsu, Toshiba, IBM and so on. Basically, there are hard disks with liquid bearings.

2, other hard disk noise reduction technology

In addition to the use of liquid bearing motor technology, major hard disk manufacturers also have their own unique "kung fu" to deal with hard disk noise. Let's take a look at the noise reduction technology of different brands of hard disks.

(1) Seagate hard disk noise reduction technology

Once upon a time, Seagate's IDE hard disk almost became synonymous with loud hard disk, but all this vanished with the introduction of barracuda ATA IV hard disk. The application of sound shielding technology (SBT) makes Seagate's hard disk the quietest IDE hard disk at present. Sound shielding technology includes the following items:

Soft acoustic wave hydrodynamic bearing technology: Soft acoustic wave motor is the core of sound shielding technology (SBT) of Seagate hard disk, and it is also a technological breakthrough appreciated by various computer users. According to the industry standard test, the noise emitted by the cool fish ATA IV single-disk model is only 2 bells when rotating, 2.4 bells when seeking, and the sound below 2.5 bells is inaudible to human ears.

(2) Maxtor hard disk noise reduction technology.

Since the acquisition of Quantum, Maituo's hard disk business is booming. In addition to applying its own noise reduction technology, Maituo also adopted many technologies of Quantum Company, including QDT mute technology. Maituo silent store technology: actually, this is not a new technology. Maituo put forward this noise reduction scheme long ago, which was called "acoustic management" at that time. The principle of this technology is to add a control program to the BIOS chip of the hard disk to artificially reduce the reaction speed of the magnetic head power arm, that is, to reduce the seek speed, thus reducing the noise.

Because this technology will slightly reduce the performance of the hard disk, and the noise problem was not very prominent when the 5400 rpm hard disk was the mainstream a few years ago, it was not applied until the 7200 rpm hard disk became the mainstream. Users can download the latest control program from Maituo official website, Maituo's AMSET utility, which is used for Maituo's hard disk with silent storage technology. Decompress the downloaded program to a floppy disk, and then use this floppy disk to start the computer and run the Amset program.

Amset.exe has four parameters, namely/Quiet,/Fast,/Check and/Close. /quiet mode can reduce hard disk noise, but it will reduce performance. /Fast mode allows a slight decrease in performance in exchange for noise reduction, but the noise reduction effect is not as good as that of/Silent mode; /check can check the current mute mode of the hard disk, /off will completely turn off the noise reduction function option, so that the hard disk can run at the best performance.

Noise reduction technology of IBM Drive noise suppression system: When this technology is applied to IBM's desktop hard disk, it mainly includes ceramic spindle motor, improved voice coil motor and three-layer top cover to reduce noise transmission. With the application of these advanced technologies, the working noise of IBM Longteng fourth-generation hard disk is only 3. 1 bell (3 disks) to 3.0 bell (2 disks or less).

Noise is greatly reduced by slightly reducing the performance of the hard disk.

(4) Samsung noise reduction technology

For Samsung hard disk, some users may not be very clear. By the end of 1999, Samsung's hard disk production capacity reached120,000 pieces per month, but at that time it was mainly supplied to the market in the form of OEM, so Samsung's hard disk products rarely appeared in DIY market. However, as early as then, Samsung's hard disk set up the product characteristics of high performance, low noise and low working temperature, and enjoyed a good reputation in the industry. At present, Samsung's hard drives have entered the China market in a big way, mainly divided into V series with 5400 rpm and P series with 7200 rpm. These two series of hard disks adopt Samsung's unique hard disk noise reduction technology, and the mute effect is quite remarkable.

Noise protection: it mainly includes three aspects: first, install sound insulation board on the top cover to further prevent internal vibration from spreading; Secondly, improve the design and structure of the top cover to reduce the noise generated by the spindle motor; Finally, the design of spindle motor is improved to reduce the vibration caused by high-speed operation.

Silent seek: The principle of this technology is to optimize and fine-tune the driving waveform of the voice coil motor through a special DSP (Digital Signal Processor) to smooth the acceleration of the head arm during seek, and reduce the seek noise of the voice coil motor while ensuring the seek speed as far as possible.

Another method is to mute the hard disk.

Frequent hard disk hibernation not only affects the continuous working speed of the system, but also shortens the physical life of the hard disk.

(2) The latest overall design

Because there are too many noise sources in the computer, it is difficult to completely solve them by one or two methods, so some people have put forward the design of "cabinet-type" and "split-type" computers, that is, putting the main chassis of the computer in the cabinet with the front panel closed or in another room to make it "invisible, inaudible and trouble-free". Theoretically, this method works best, but you must have a long signal line, and it is not convenient for you to switch CDs or floppy disks frequently.

(3) Hardware transformation

If you want to keep your ears quiet, try to choose those drive brackets with thick shells, no big openings, good fixity and low noise of power fans, such as Patriot's "Moonlight Box" series.

If you have to choose those cheap cases because of lack of money, you can also do some remedial measures. For example, you can pad some soft cloth at the bottom of the chassis; Tighten the screws on the chassis and add soft washers; The interior of the box body is lined with sound-absorbing materials such as foam plastic board; Changing the placement position of the chassis can also get good results. It's just that most of those sound-absorbing materials have poor thermal conductivity, so we should pay attention to the problem of ventilation and heat dissipation.

In this way, the CPU fan, the graphics card fan, the power supply fan and the fan on the chassis constitute the main noise sources of the computer. To create a healthy and silent pc, noise reduction by fans is undoubtedly the key.

1, cooling fan noise formation principle:

How is the noise of the cooling fan formed? The central axis of the fan includes a shaft and a bearing. The overall center of mass of the fan has a certain deviation angle from the central axis. At first, it was lubricated by engine oil, but after long-term use, the fan vibrated up and down at high speed, resulting in noise.

Moreover, the friction between shaft and bearing will inevitably cause vibration and noise with the extension of service time. The higher the frequency of the accessories we use, the stronger the performance, and the higher the speed and noise of the fans we use.

Cooling fan is the main component of air-cooled cooling system, and it is also the key to determine its cooling effect. The quality of the fan mainly depends on the type of bearing used. Of course, there are also the speed of the fan and the characteristics of the blades (diameter, weight, cutting angle, shape, etc. ) can't be ignored. At present, according to the rotating shaft and air outlet direction of the fan, the fan is divided into axial flow type and turbine type. Turbofan, also called centrifugal fan, uses centrifugal force to make air flow along the radial direction of blades, which plays the role of heat dissipation. It is mostly used in hard disks and CPU radiators, and this kind of products is rare in the market. Axial flow fan is the most common mainstream product in the market, and its blades are generally directly connected with the motor, and the external force of the blades makes the air flow along the axial direction to dissipate heat.

According to the bearings currently used by cooling fans, they can be divided into the following categories:

Sleeve bearings are also called self-lubricating bearings or oil-sealed bearings. It consists of a fan rotor, a motor stator and a driving circuit. It works by magnetic field induction through the pivot connection between the shaft core and the bearing. Its advantages are simple structure, low cost, low noise and good impact resistance.

The disadvantage is that its noise will increase with the volatilization loss of lubricating oil; Dust is easily sucked into the motor core and mixed with the lubricating oil around the bearing to form sludge, resulting in running noise and even jamming; Bearing inner diameter is easy to wear, and its service life is short, mostly in 8000~ 15000 hours.

Ball bearings can be divided into double ball bearings and single ball bearings. The former is that the rotating shaft of the fan is sleeved in the center of the bearing shaft with several steel balls in the upper and lower layers, which are used in conjunction with the spring. When the fan blade rotates around the axis, the steel ball rotates with it. The latter is the way of ball bearing with oil seal bearing, which reduces the cost and noise of double ball bearing fan. The operation of metal ball belongs to point contact, the friction coefficient of rolling friction is less than sliding friction, which makes it easy to activate operation, the wear is less than that of oil-bearing and the service life is longer (40,000 ~ 55,000 hours). But the cost is high, the noise is high, the bearing structure is fragile and the impact resistance is poor.

Magnetic bearing mainly uses the principle of electromagnetic force to make the fan blades rotate. When the fan works, the magnetic levitation force attracts the blades to keep a certain gap between the rotor and stator of the fan, and the fan rotates stably at a fixed point with a 360-degree orbit. It solves the problems of shaking and vibration when the traditional motor fan is running. At the same time, the rotation of the fan blades is suspended, and there is no direct contact and friction between the shaft center and the bearing, so it has low noise, high temperature resistance, small vibration and long service life (about 50,000 hours). In addition, its dust cover design can also prevent dust from entering and isolate some noise. Therefore, magnetic bearing combines the advantages of oil-bearing and ball bearing and overcomes its disadvantages. On this basis, AVC and other international manufacturers have developed "hydraulic bearing" fans. The magnetic suspension structure combined with high oil film lubrication can effectively reduce the running noise and prolong the service life of the fan.

The structure of nano-ceramic bearing is similar to that of oil-bearing and is made of nano-polymer materials, special additives (such as ceramic powder), stamping die and sintering process. It has the characteristics of firmness, smoothness, wear resistance and long service life (50,000 hours). At present, only Tt and Foxconn have introduced fan radiators using this new technology.

2. Methods to reduce the noise of the fan

(1) Pay attention to the fan selection:

For frequently used fan products, the faster the rotating speed, the better the heat dissipation capacity of the fan, and of course the greater the noise. Take the processor fan as an example. Commonly used bearing methods include oil seal bearing fan, ball bearing fan and hydraulic bearing fan. The first two kinds of fans are relatively noisy, and the hydraulic bearing fans are relatively quiet, but they are also expensive. Brand-name products tend to minimize product errors in the production process, so the quality of the fans produced is also good. However, after a period of use, the bearings of famous brand fans wear out prematurely, resulting in huge noise.

When buying, you can put the fan next to your ear for an audition. If you can clearly hear the noise of the fan, it is recommended not to buy such a product. In addition, generally speaking, fans with relatively large diagonal length are more worth buying, because in order to achieve the same heat dissipation effect, the rotation speed of large fans must be lower than that of small fans, so the noise is relatively less.

(2) Strengthen the "lubrication" of fans.

Because the cooling fan of oil-bearing is cheap, most computers use this kind of cooling fan. The motor with oil-bearing needs to be oiled again after a period of use. Otherwise, its friction coefficient will be greatly increased, which will produce quite "noisy" noise and even cause chassis vibration.

The method of oiling the fan motor is simple: remove the cooling fan from the heat sink, and then peel off the sealant paper on the back of the fan. At this time, we can see the oil injection hole in the center of the fan. Drop a few drops of lubricating oil (sewing machine lubricating oil is enough) into the oil injection hole, and then stick sealant paper to complete the oil injection of the fan.

(3) "deceleration" noise reduction:

By reducing the rotational speed of the fan, the intensity of noise can be effectively reduced, and even the noise can be eliminated fundamentally. At present, there are manual governors and automatic governors for cooling fans on the market. The automatic governor can automatically adjust the speed of the fan according to the temperature of the CPU heat sink (with thermal probe). After installation, there is no need to open the chassis. Manual governor generally has only three gears: normal, medium speed and low speed. Every time you manually adjust the speed, you need to open the chassis.

In addition to using hardware to reduce the speed, we can also use special CPU fan speed reduction software to reduce the speed of the fan, and the typical software is SpeedFan. The software can automatically control the speed of the CPU fan through the CPU temperature fed back by the temperature sensor on the motherboard. When the CPU temperature is low, the speed of the CPU fan can be reduced, so as to achieve the purpose of noise reduction. However, this software has certain hardware requirements for the CPU fan induction controller on the motherboard, so it needs the support of the motherboard to realize the automatic speed regulation function of the CPU fan of the software.

(4) Using "alternative" cooling devices:

The so-called alternative radiator is to abandon the traditional "air-cooled" radiator and replace the noisy "air-cooled" radiator with oversized fins, heat pipes and water cooling.

Super large area radiator:

That is to say, the air-cooled radiator is replaced by a radiator with a large area. Because of the cancellation of the noisy cooling fan, we must use a radiator several times larger than the previous radiator to remove heat.

2) Heat pipe radiator:

Heat pipe makes full use of the physical principle that water and gas constantly absorb heat and release heat due to state transition to transfer heat, which can transfer heat from the bottom of heat pipe to the top of heat pipe at an extremely fast speed. This excellent thermal conductivity can make the heat not accumulate in the heating part, but evenly distributed on the heat sink. Because of its good thermal conductivity, the whole radiator has little requirement for air convection.

3) Water cooling circulation device:

The water cooling device takes away heat by the circulation of water. We often see that many DIYer experts will use water cooling devices when doing overclocking experiments. But there will still be some noise, because the whole system still has a fan. In addition, water cooling is not commonly used, because there must be adequate protection measures to prevent water leakage. At the same time, the cost of water-cooled radiator is not low and the installation is complicated. Although the cooling effect is first-class, it is not suitable for primary users.
