1. How to prune grapevines in winter:

The main thing to pay attention to when pruning grapevines in winter is the removal and retention of the fruiting mother branches. The fruit-bearing mother branches refer to the branches that have matured for one year and can sprout and bear fruit in the Spring Festival of the next year. As a result, the length of the mother branch requires many considerations. The variety, growth habit, planting environment, and planting technology of the fruit tree are all important aspects that affect fruit tree pruning.

The pruning length is generally divided into long tip pruning, mid-tip pruning and short tip pruning. Long-shoot pruning generally leaves 8 to 11 buds, which is common in the pruning process of grape varieties such as Red Grape, Beauty Finger, and Kyoho.

Generally, 5 to 7 buds should be retained during mid-shoot pruning. Grapevines that undergo mid-shoot pruning are mostly grapevine varieties with moderate growth. Short-shoot pruning generally retains 2 to 4 buds, and is mostly used for grape varieties with abundant flower buds at the base of the branches and strong fruit-bearing ability, such as Hutai No. 8, Rose Fragrance and other varieties.

In addition to pruning the fruiting mother branches, you also need to pay attention to the renewal and pruning of the fruiting branches and vines. It is generally divided into two situations: double-branch renewal pruning, single-branch renewal pruning, and perennial branch renewal pruning. These pruning methods are all adapted to different situations of grapevines.

Double-branch renewal pruning is generally used for pruning mid-to-long shoots. Generally, two branches are left, one is the fruiting mother branch at the top, and the other is the preparation branch at the lower section. In the second year, the mother branch will bear fruit and the preparation branch will sprout new branches and vines. In winter, perform the same pruning, pruning off the mother branch, and leaving one of the two new branches on the preparation branch as the fruiting mother branch and the other as a preparation branch. This is how it will be pruned from now on.

Single branch renewal pruning is relatively simple. There is no need to keep the preparation branches, only the fruiting mother branches are needed, and then the fruiting mother branches will be pruned in the second year to continuously renew them. Renewal and pruning of perennial branches requires attention to take turns to renew branches and vines.

2. How to prune grapevines in summer:

The pruning of grapevines in summer is also a major task in the growth and management process of grapevines. It is not like winter pruning after pruning. You can let the grapevines survive the winter. The pruning time of grapevines in summer is relatively long. Generally, pruning can be done from the budding of grapevines in spring to autumn, so it can also be seen that pruning grapevines in summer is very important.

Summer grapevine pruning is generally divided into bud removal, shoot removal, branch setting, new shoot topping, secondary shoot treatment, inflorescence trimming, tendril removal, frame shaping and other issues. Grapevine pruning is also required in spring and autumn, but these two seasons are generally minor auxiliary pruning and are not as important as pruning in winter and summer.
