How to trim camellias?
As I said before, camellia grows slowly, only leaves twice a year, and rarely in summer, which is not suitable for intensive pruning. When pruning, we should master the following six principles: (1) Cut off diseased dead branches, clustered branches, cross branches and overlapping branches, and cut the mouth smoothly without leaving any residual piles. (2) Leave three for each branch. Keep the main branch on each branch. (3) The branches that are too high should be taken back and trimmed, and new buds will grow at the lower part of the incision, so that the plants will be fuller. (4) After pruning, the sprouted extra buds should be wiped off. Generally, it is advisable to leave two buds at each germination point. (5) According to the cultivation requirements, camellia can be trimmed into different shapes, such as round head, straight tube, short crown or other geometric figures. This kind of shaping method has a large amount of pruning, and the sprouted branches after pruning are strong, which requires multiple pruning to control the tree type. (6) Camellia pruning should be carried out continuously for many years, and the weak direction should be supported and the strong direction should be controlled according to the shape of the tree, so that the plants can develop in a balanced way and achieve the effect of beautiful flowers. Pruning is not only pruning, but also pruning in a broad sense should include measures such as core removal, leaf picking, bud peeling, peeling, leaf cutting and bundling. This is done to adjust the density and orientation of branches and leaves, the height, width and narrowness of plant types. Stripping and binding mainly control the growth of different parts and make collective adjustment. For example, leaves, twigs and buds are dense but not in harmony with other parts, and a part can be directly removed or cut off to make the plant balanced and symmetrical. Local branches or buds are uneven or tend to be steep, so local peeling and tight bunching can be used to control nutrient transportation to adjust and balance nutrient distribution and growth rate of each part. When cutting, picking and bundling, attention should be paid to keeping the stubble flat and appropriate in length so as not to damage other branches, leaves and buds.
