How to prune loquat?

Loquat is not tolerant to heavy pruning, resulting in multiple branches. Except moderately pruning the branches that are excessively dense and excessively long, the pruning of other branches is generally lighter. Old fruiting mother branches can be thinned according to their growth strength, combined with fruit picking, or 2 ~ 3 buds can be reserved for shrinkage cutting to promote regeneration. When the bearing branches are too dense, we should also remove the weak and retain the strong, and properly remove them. When there are too many fruiting branches, it is necessary to remove some epigenetic fruiting branches formed by lateral buds. There are many hidden buds in loquat. After the tree body is aged, it can be retracted and pruned, and the hidden buds can be used to re-shoot.

Loquat is an evergreen fruit tree, which does not sleep all year round, so it can be pruned all year round. For young trees, in order to expand the crown quickly, form early and bear fruit early, generally, only the long branches are properly treated, so as to increase the fruiting branches and promote the differentiation of flower buds. Pruning of adult fruit trees is mainly carried out in summer and autumn from June to July after fruit picking. Pruning after fruit picking is mainly to cut off the strong and long branches, piercing branches, dense branches, delicate branches, cross branches, drooping branches, dead branches of diseases and pests that disturb the normal tree shape. At the same time, the weak fruiting branch group was shortened and rejuvenated. Most of the summer shoots of loquat in that year were excellent fruiting mother branches, and more than 9% of them could blossom and bear fruit in that year. Reasonable pruning in summer, combined with proper and timely fertilizer and water management, and promoting a large number of robust and tidy summer shoots are the key to overcome the fruits of different years and obtain high yield in successive years. Autumn pruning mainly removes too many or premature flower buds, secondary shoots under the flower spike (autumn shoots), short-cut branches and so on. When trimming, it is required to cut the mouth flat and leave leaves under the mouth.
