How are Gastrodia slices processed?

Quare hemp and white hemp can be processed into commercial hemp. The processing of Gastrodia elata should be done as needed. If stored for too long, the Gastrodia elata will become empty.

(1) Grading

According to the size of Gastrodia elata, it can be divided into 3 to 4 grades. Generally, those with a fresh weight of more than 90 grams are first grade, and those with a fresh weight of 45 to 85 grams are first grade. Second class, those under 45 grams and those with bruises and cut off are third class. Then wash the soil and process it as you go, so as not to affect the efficacy of the medicine.

(2) Steaming

Steam the washed fresh Gastrodia elata for 15 to 20 minutes. It is required to steam thoroughly so that no black core is visible. You can also scald it in boiling water for 5 to 15 minutes. Then put it into the smokehouse and smoke it with sulfur for 10 to 12 hours. The smoked gastrodia elata has a bright and white color, good quality, and can prevent insects and mildew.

(3) Drying

The smoked gastrodia elata should be baked and dried immediately. The temperature is required to be controlled at 50 to 60°C. The initial temperature should not be too high to prevent the water in Gastrodia elata from evaporating too quickly and causing the middle sugar center and skin to form a hard shell. If the temperature is too low (40°C), moisture needs to be drained to prevent the occurrence of mold and rot. ; Bake over slow fire until 70% to 80% dry, take out, flatten and shape, then raise the temperature to about 70°C and continue baking until completely dry. Check frequently during drying to prevent scorching, deterioration or bubbling.
