Among them, the leaves of Podocarpus are only 2 cm long and have a beautiful tree shape, which is a precious tree species for making bonsai. Raki has a warm and humid environment, is more tolerant to shade, and likes fertile, loose, well-drained and slightly acidic sandy loam. The production method of that bonsai is as follow:

First, the source and propagation of seedlings

The seedlings of Podocarpus bonsai are usually obtained by artificial propagation methods such as sowing and cutting. Shan Ye also has wild Podocarpus, which is usually born in crevices. Plants are short, with simple branches and graceful posture. Propagation method: cutting method is commonly used, and seeding method and grafting method can also be used for propagation. Cutting time is in the middle of March in early spring or the rainy season in June-July. When cutting, cuttings should have roots and seedbeds should be shaded. The most suitable transplanting date is March in spring. Sowing is done after the seeds are collected at the end of August, or stored in the sand until March of the following year. Because the cutting growth of Podocarpus is slow, Podocarpus macrophylla or Podocarpus microphylla should be used as rootstock. The survival rate of grafting in early spring of March is high.

Podocarpus is usually put into a pot before germination in spring, and the pot soil should be slightly acidic sandy loam with loose texture and good drainage. Because arhat pine's posture is simple and elegant, it is advisable to choose purple sand pot or glazed pottery pot for cultivation, and the shape of the pot depends on the tree shape.

2. Modeling

The modeling of arhat pine is mostly carried out in the dormant period, mainly by rolling, supplemented by pruning. Because the branches of Podocarpus are soft and easy to bind and trim, they have different shapes. The common forms are curved dry type, inclined dry type, flat cloud type, cliff type and root lifting type. Branches and leaves can be trimmed into slices or steamed buns.

3. Cultivation and maintenance

Podocarpus can be planted in the ground or potted, and the maintenance and management requirements are not strict. In the spring and autumn growing seasons, as long as L-2, which is mainly nitrogen fertilizer, is topdressing, there is no need for too much phosphorus and potassium fertilizer. For the formed bonsai, we must pay attention to coring and pruning to prevent the branches and leaves from growing white, so as to maintain the original posture. Pruning and coring should be carried out in spring and autumn. Podocarpus planted in pots at home should be kept outdoors in a ventilated place all year round, not indoors for a long time, otherwise the leaves will fall off and die. High temperature in summer is not suitable for exposure, so it needs to be maintained in a semi-shady place. In the growing season, there can be a little more water; In hot summer, when the basin soil is dry, water it in time and pour it thoroughly; Moisture can be appropriately reduced in autumn and winter. When the temperature drops to 5℃ in winter in East China, it is necessary to enter the house for winter and control the amount of watering. It's better to dry the soil in the basin.

Podocarpus should be stored in a warm, humid and ventilated place in summer and indoors above 5℃ in winter. But the temperature should not be too high, so as not to affect its dormancy.

Podocarpus likes moist soil, so it should be watered frequently during the growing season to keep the soil moist, but no water can be accumulated in the basin. Water is often sprayed on the leaves or the ground in summer to keep the leaves bright.

(3) Fertilization

The formed Podocarpus is not suitable for fertilization. Usually in the growing season, the decomposed dilute liquid fertilizer is applied once every 1 month, and it is not applied after autumn.

(4) Pruning

Podocarpus should be pruned frequently to keep the tree shape. It is best to pick off the buds in time when flowering, so as not to consume nutrition.

Luohansong usually turns the basin once every 2-3 years. Usually in March-April.

(6) Pest control

Attention should be paid to the prevention and control of pests and diseases, especially in summer and high temperature season. Common diseases are sooty blotch and leaf spot, and 0.5% ~ 1% bordeaux mixture can be used. One month before the rainy season, spraying once every 10 day for three consecutive times can achieve the control effect.
