What are the requirements for the cultivation of juniper bonsai?
Cultivation requirements of juniper bonsai:

First, the juniper stump is excavated.

The digging and planting of juniper is mostly carried out before germination in winter or early spring. Thinning should be carried out according to the shape of the stump before transplanting, and all unnecessary branches should be cut off. When digging, the main root is cut off, leaving more lateral roots, fine roots and fibrous roots. It is best to transplant with soil balls. For plants with bare roots, the roots should be kept moist and fresh. First plant it in plain sand to improve the blank. When the quantity is large, it can be planted underground. When the amount is small, or people who live in buildings can also plant them in pots.

After planting juniper, the soil should be compacted, watered and sprayed once, and the plants should be covered with transparent plastic film to keep warm and moist. In spring, as the temperature rises, the stumps will gradually sprout. When the temperature in the plastic film is too high or the humidity is low, the corner of the plastic film can be opened for ventilation and cooling, and water can be replenished in time, but the soil cannot accumulate water to avoid rotting the roots. When the plant grows stably, the plastic film should be gradually removed. For the surviving stumps, we can let them grow without modeling in the first year, and then move them into loose, breathable and well-drained sand for modeling in the second spring.

Second, modeling.

For juniper seedlings propagated by sowing, cutting and layering, they can be coiled with metal wires. When coiling, the original shape of the trunk should be used as much as possible to process them into different forms of bonsai, such as single-stem, oblique-stem, curved-stem, water-facing, cliff-like, stone-attached, etc.

For old piles that have grown for many years, they vary from tree to tree and have different shapes. Referring to the shape of cypress in nature and the ancient cypress in painting, the method of rough binding and fine cutting is adopted to show the ancient, simple and energetic charm of cypress.

Juniper is often wrapped, twisted and bent on flat strips with metal wires. Some people call it "the method of twisting tendons to turn bones" When tying the main branch, press down along the direction of wire twisting to prevent the base from cracking. When the wire starts to pull into the branches, it should be untied in time. If the shape does not meet the requirements, it can be rewound to avoid scarring. For the old Castanopsis kawakamii stump, according to the need, part of the bark can be stripped along the fiber of the bark, coated with a mixture of stone and sulfur, and made into a "vestige stem" or "divine branch" to make it grow old in Gu Zhuo. When peeling, you should twist along the waterline of the stump to achieve the artistic effect of "from nature, higher than nature"

Juniper likes warm, humid and sunny environment, and is slightly tolerant to shade, cold and drought. The made bonsai can be maintained in a sunny and well-ventilated place outdoors. Don't apply too much fertilizer, lest plants grow in vain and affect the beauty of trees.

Third, maintenance precautions

Watering: keep the soil moist and thoroughly watered during the growth period, and don't "half-water". When the air is dry, spray water on the blades to increase the air humidity and make the blades fresh, but pay attention to drainage even in rainy days.

Fertilization: apply decomposed dilute liquid fertilizer at the end of April and the beginning of September every year. In winter, put it in a cold room, or even bury it in an outdoor shelter from the wind and sun for the winter. Don't water it too much.

Pruning: Pruning and modeling of juniper bonsai should be carried out in winter, and redundant branches, branches with bad angles and other branches that affect the tree shape should be cut off. For branches that are too long, you can pick the tips during the growth period to promote new buds and make the branches dense.

Pot turning: small bonsai is turned once every two years, and large bonsai is turned once every four to five years, usually before germination in spring. When turning over pots, cut off diseased roots, rotten roots and some old roots, sparse dense roots, remove 1/2 ~ 1/3 old soil, and replant with new fertile culture soil.
