2 Summary Styloid process syndrome is a general term for symptoms such as foreign body sensation in pharynx, sore throat or reflex earache, head and neck pain, and increased salivary glands caused by long styloid process or abnormal orientation and shape of its adjacent blood vessels and nerves. Common in adults.
The diagnosis of this disease is often neglected. Anyone over the age of 20 who has sore throat, foreign body sensation, neck pain, earache and headache should think of this disease and take palpation and styloid process photos. Tonsillar surgery is feasible if necessary. This disease should be differentiated from pharyngitis, glossopharyngitis, glossopharyngeal neuralgia and styloid process fracture.
4. Surgical treatment is the main treatment. The basic indications should be determined according to the patient's situation. If the styloid process is too long and has no symptoms or mild symptoms, surgery is not needed. The patient's symptoms are obviously urgent and need to be done by the operator. The surgical methods are mostly oral tonsil surgery or neck external diameter surgery to shorten styloid process.
The etiology of the disease is complex. ① styloid process is too long: the average length of normal styloid process is about 2.5cm, and beyond this length, styloid process is too long. The stem protrudes from the inferior anterolateral side of the stylomastoid foramen of the temporal bone, showing a thin cylindrical shape, and the distal end extends inward and anterolateral, between the internal carotid artery and the external carotid artery. The styloid process is so long that its distal end extends into or near the tonsil fossa. No matter whether the tonsils are removed or not, foreign body sensation in the pharynx can appear, such as nerve endings and sore throat. Too long styloid process compresses or rubs the carotid artery, which affects blood circulation and can cause pain in the corresponding area. But there are also people whose styloid process is too long and asymptomatic. ② Abnormal orientation and shape of styloid process: The length of styloid process in some patients is within the normal range, but its orientation and shape are abnormal, or the abnormal carotid artery makes it deviate, causing headaches and other symptoms. ③ Tonsillitis and scar traction after tonsillectomy can also be the cause of this disease. ④ Glossopharyngeal neuritis is closely related to this disease.
The clinical manifestations are slow onset and different medical histories. There is often pain in the tonsil area and the base of the tongue, which is often unilateral, but not severe, and can radiate to the ear or neck, which is aggravated when swallowed. The sensation of foreign body or obstruction in the pharynx is more common, mostly on one side, more obvious when swallowing, and sometimes aggravated when talking, turning around or at night. It can also cause cough. When the carotid artery is compressed or rubbed, the pain can radiate upward from one mandibular angle to the head, neck or face. Sometimes there may be tinnitus, salivation, insomnia and other neurasthenia.
Physical examination: Hard cord-like or spiny processes can be found in the tonsil area by palpation, and patients can complain that this area is uncomfortable, which can induce or aggravate sore throat. Most of them are too long on one side. X-ray films of styloid process often show that its length is too long or crooked.
The missing position of acupoints for the treatment of styloid process syndrome: forearm positioning: standard positioning: the missing position is on the radial edge of forearm, above the styloid process of radius, on the wrist transverse striation 1.5 inch, and between the brachioradialis muscle and abductor pollicis tendon. ...
Names of strange points outside Shenmen meridian. The true meaning of acupuncture has been published. It is located at the ulnar edge of wrist, at the straight depression of styloid process of ulna, and at the ulnar edge of flexor carpi ulnaris tendon, counting 2 points from left to right. therapy ...
