The Snowdon Festival is held in the end of June and the beginning of July in the Tibetan calendar every year. It is a traditional festival in Tibet. In Tibetan, "snow" means yogurt, and "rice" means "eating" and "feast". According to the Tibetan explanation, the Sutton Festival is a festival to eat yogurt, so it is also called the "Yogurt Festival". Some people call it "Tibetan Opera Festival" and "Buddha Baking Festival" because there is a grand and enthusiastic Tibetan opera performance and a grand Buddha baking ceremony during the Xuedun Festival.
The origin of festivals
The Tibetan Opera Festival, also known as the Sutton Festival, is one of the traditional Tibetan festivals. In Tibetan, "snow" means yogurt, and "rice" means "feast" and "eat". According to Tibetan, Snowdon Festival means eating yogurt. The Tibetan calendar is held on July 1st every year for four or five days. Xuedun Festival is a Tibetan translation, which means "yogurt feast", so Xuedun Festival is interpreted as a festival for drinking yogurt. Later, it gradually evolved into the Tibetan Opera Festival, also known as the Tibetan Opera Festival. According to the regulations of Gelug Sect of Tibetan Buddhism (Yellow Sect), the temple is forbidden from June 15 to 30th every year, and monks in temples are not allowed to go out to avoid stepping on insects, and they can only go down the mountain after the lifting of the ban on June 30th. When the Lama went down the mountain, farmers and herdsmen took out yogurt to offer sacrifices, forming the Snowdon Festival.
Later, the activities of the Xuedun Festival gradually evolved into Tibetan opera performances, so some people called it the Tibetan Opera Festival. This festival is also called "Semu Qinbo" not only in Lhasa, but also in Shigatse. It is late in Bilasa and its scale is small. Before17th century, the Shelton Festival was a purely religious festival. According to the regulations of the Gelug Sect of Tibetan Buddhism, June 15-30 is the Tibetan calendar forbidden day every year. Monks and nuns in all Tibetan monasteries are not allowed to go out for fear of stepping on bugs. They must do three things in the temple: get clean and settle down in summer until they are liberated. On July 1st of the Tibetan calendar, the ban was lifted and they went down the mountain one after another. At this time, farmers and herdsmen had to take out the prepared yogurt as a tribute. This is the origin of the Snowdon Festival.
