In the 7th century, the fathers of Zheng Chen and Chen Yuanguang settled in Zhangzhou, forming Zhangzhou dialect. After they entered Fujian, most of them settled in the southeast along the Yangtze River and coastal plains, and Heluo dialect gradually became a popular dialect in southern Fujian, that is, Minnan dialect popular in Zhangzhou, Xiamen, Quanzhou and eastern Guangdong. Nowadays, there are still many ancient Chinese words in Minnan dialect, such as Ding (Guo), Mian (Mian), Yi (She), Zou (Run), Zhu (Chopsticks), Egg (Egg), Mo (Don't), Pai (Beat), Sun (Sun) and Dark Coffin. Minnan dialect, which originated from Heluo dialect in the Central Plains, not only spreads in southern Fujian, eastern Guangdong, Leizhou Peninsula, Taiwan Province Province and Southeast Asia, but also spreads in southern Zhejiang, most of Hainan, northeastern Jiangxi, eastern Guangxi, and even near Chengdu, Sichuan, Yixing, Jiangsu and parts of western Hunan. It is estimated that there are more than 50 million people who speak Minnan at home and abroad. Quanzhou dialect is the representative pronunciation of Minnan dialect in the past, and Liyuan Opera and Nanyin in local operas with a long history in southern Fujian still use Quanzhou dialect as the standard pronunciation. The dominant Minnan language in Taiwan Province Province is "Zhang Quanlan". Minnan dialect in Zhangzhou is popular in some areas of Chaoshan Sea, Lufeng, Zhangping and Longyan and some dialect islands.

Zhangzhou dialect generally refers to Minnan dialect in Zhangzhou, and Zhangzhou Hakka dialect has great influence in Taiwan Province Province, namely Zhaoan dialect. Zhaoan dialect is similar to Guangdong and Taiwan Hakka Raoping dialect in phonetic features, but different from Dapu dialect, Sixian dialect and Hailu dialect. Because of its small population, Raoping dialect in Guangdong is generally classified as Zhao 'an dialect (Raoping dialect was merged into Tai Po dialect when studying its native place). Hakka dialects in Taiwan Province are divided into Meizhou (or Chaozhou dialect, including Sixian dialect, Dapu dialect and Raoping dialect), Huizhou (Hailu dialect, Hayes dialect/Hayes dialect) and Zhangzhou. The ancestral home of Minnan dialect must be Zhangzhou and Quanzhou. The population of Hakka ethnic group in Taiwan Province Province is far less than that of Minnan ethnic group, but its dialects are much more than Minnan dialects. There are only two dialects of Minnan ethnic group, Quanzhou dialect and Zhangzhou dialect, and there are four representative dialects of Hakka ethnic group. Zhangzhou dialect in a broad sense includes Zhao 'an Hakka dialect, but Zhangzhou dialect in a broad sense refers to Zhangzhou Minnan dialect.
