Pianguan County is located at the junction of Shanxi and Mongolia in the northwest of Shanxi Province, between east longitude1122 ′-1kloc-0/′, and north latitude 3912 ′-39 40 ′. The total population of the county is 102085, including 54572 males, 475 females13, and the agricultural population is 88995. The county government is stationed in Chengguan Town. Pianguan County governs 4 towns and 6 townships: Xinguan Town, Tianfengping Town, Laoying Town, Wanjiazhai Town, Yaotou Township, Lougou Township, Shangyu Township, Nanbaozi Township, Shuiquan Township and Chen Jiaying Township.

The climate belongs to continental semi-arid area, which is cold, dry and windy. The average annual temperature is 8℃, the coldest in 1 month and the hottest in July, with an average temperature of 23℃, an average annual precipitation of about 420mm and an average frost-free period of 140 days.

The county is rich in mineral resources, mainly coal, sulfur, iron ore and limestone. The total reserves of coal resources are about 91.200 million tons. Sulfur resources are also abundant, with proven reserves of 4 1.8 million tons. The mining and processing of sulfur ore has a long history, but the output has not been high due to backward technology and poor production conditions. In addition, limestone reserves are also large and there are many varieties, which provide good resource conditions for the development of building materials industry.

Industries mainly include electric power, fertilizer, ceramics, ironmaking, cement, rubber products, agricultural machinery repair, mechanical casting, carpets, clothing, printing, grain and oil processing and other industries.

Traffic is mainly by road. The Yellow River Diversion Highway from Pinglu to Wanjiazhai passes through the middle of the county seat. The original trunk highway from Pingyang to Chuanmao in Inner Mongolia passes through the county seat, and there are many simple highways centered on the county seat. The total length of highways in the county is 249 kilometers, including 66 kilometers at the provincial level, 0/29 kilometers at the county level and 44 kilometers at the township level. The county 15 townships are all connected by cars, and the traffic congestion has been greatly improved. In addition, there are many ferries along the Yellow River, and wooden boats can reach Hequ, Baode and Du Jun in the south, and communicate with other places.

Pianguan was an important frontier defense town in ancient times, with many places of interest. There are six Great Walls built in Ming Dynasty, with a total length of 500 kilometers-Ming Great Wall and Lingxiao Tower built in Ming Dynasty. There are Longgang Temple and ancient beacon tower caves built in the Tang Dynasty.
