Setting background of five-nation joint defense
In the late 1960s and early 1970s, when the Cold War raged, the British army, as the former sovereign state of Malaysia and Singapore, went from bad to worse, and it was difficult to bear the responsibilities brought by the British-Malaysian Defence Agreement, so it deliberately withdrew from Southeast Asia. The United States has also thrown out "Guamanism" and made major strategic adjustments to East Asia, especially Southeast Asia. The United States undertakes treaty obligations, but encourages its Asian allies to take responsibility for domestic security and military defense, and the United States avoids being involved in Vietnam-style wars. The strategic adjustment of the United States and Britain makes Malaysia and Singapore, which rely on the United States and Britain for security, panic. Under such circumstances, the Five-State Defense Agreement came into being.
