Academy refers to an artist group organized for various purposes, such as promoting the development of national art, cultivating artists, and enhancing the professional and economic status of members through regular exhibitions and awarding honorary members.
Italy established its own Academy of Fine Arts as early as16th century, while France, Britain and the United States successively established their own Academy of Fine Arts in 17, 18 and19th century. Because of its official and semi-official status, the college has always adhered to conservative artistic standards and refused to recognize artists whose works or ideas are incompatible with the perfect standards of traditional colleges.
The most criticized part of the Academy of Fine Arts is that it constantly supports the works rejected by the previous generation-at the same time, it rejects the current innovative works, and those rejected works are regarded as new standards as rigid as the old standards in the next generation.
At the beginning of the 20th century, artists whose ideas had gone beyond the limit of19th century academy rarely had the opportunity to publish their works unless they held solo exhibitions.
With the establishment of the Museum of Modern Art and the improvement of the appreciation of abstract art and other modern works of art by the general public and art collectors, reformist artists no longer rely on the recognition of the academy, and the conflict between academicians and heretics has gradually eased.
However, the Academy of Fine Arts is still the center for cultivating artists with traditional or conservative orientation.
The existing important academies of fine arts include the French Academy of Fine Arts, the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in London and the National Design Institute of new york.
